The Restoration of 'Lady J' - Week 13 - Did Somebody Say Varnish ?

It's been a while but I waited until I had a bit of something to show. Progress is a bit slower now without the major changes. We've been laying varnish on her and inside as well. The hull has four brushed coats so far and will get at least one more before we block her smooth.

Once she's blocked down, I'll start spraying her.

The varnish surface is almost where I want it before we get it perfectly level.

The interior has three coats and will get two more before blocking and then I'll spray it as well.

The exterior is about the same as the hull at this point.

It's coming along...

I did manage to get the veneer on the transom. Here's the before.

The after.

I'll detail it, stain, CPES and epoxy it before we start the varnish regime. We have some catch up to do on it. All in all, just getting things done or waiting for wood. The engine will be done within a couple of weeks, hopefully. The electrical is waiting for Blue Sea to finish the custom panels.

Well Alrighty!!!

Yep you know I said varnish. Isnt it getting a bit cool? what your limit? And can you expand on "spraying"? Spray what? What about the cabin sole?

Looks really nice... pleas keep the pix coming.

The can says not below 40 degrees. I usually draw the line at 45* at the time of application when adding Penetrol and Japan Drier. The old Trident 18 (Kubota) is in the shop and is going back in when finished.

I have the goodies for the cabin sole but won't put that in until we're finished in there. I don't want it torn up before delivery. I'll be spraying the bright areas, including the hull, with a spray rig for the last six coats of varnish. This will eliminate any brushstrokes.

If it gets cooler, I'll fire up the shop heat...

Gorgeous work Charlie! All that varnish reminds me of what my father used to say about ladies of the night

…. “beautiful to look at, but if you rub them the wrong way…you are in big trouble”
