The Re-Fit Begins

everything i do with and to this boat is a refit--and while underway..is a challenge but i dont have to depend on yards--just my crazed repair guy...good thing he is excellent at his work and cheap. good thing i like htis place i am siting out repairs on engine--i could well be here a bit of time.....i wont go into a yard until i have a written estimate i like an a lot of cash in hand. and paint already mixed by me so i know what it is..lol

one soul advised me it would take 150k usd and 5 yrs to fit my boat--lol --i left sd within one year of that statement and have so far only invested under 10k usd in refit....which would have been 10 times more had i gone to yard or done this work in usa......

I dont understand how somone could spend so much money when doing a refit,remodeling a home ,restoring a car,I always do these type things for pennys on the dollar per quote!!

I am doing all the refit myself. He wants a list so that he can decide where he wants to put me in the yard. We have a huge in water boat show next weekend and he doesn't want it in the way. I would never pay Some one to work on my boat as I have been doing this most of my life. My point was that it would have been nice to have known this a week ago when I booked my lift out not 1 hour after I was supposed to be out.

i pay someone as i havent the thumbs to be able to do this work myself, but i found an honest boatwright/mechanic who knows his stuff and does a damfine job and is not a thief--very rare to find--we have an accord and he does my work and i enjoy a less pricey refit as i go ...symbiotic relationship, unlike boat yards and other weird pricey show off places.

Started on the head today. About 5 1/2 hrs. It is all striped out and ready to redesign.

Just set this weekends goals.

1: Finish removing woven wall covering in head.
2: Remove Holding Tank and Hoses
3: Remove and replace Hull Skin Fittings
4: Remove hull/Ceiling Carpet
5: Wash/Prep Holding tank area.

It'll be a long day but so far so good.
Will post pics later.

Haven't been able to work on the boat for months due to back problems and surgery but will be getting started soon. Just need some encouragement.

Here's some encouragement for you.



For a little more, think about next spring when the snow melts and picture you out on your refurbished boat, zooming around on the water, the envy of all and sundry.

Or take some encouragement from me. I'm approaching the 4 year mark on my overhaul but then I did have a lot more to do than your plan. But I can see the light way down at the end of the tunnel and at some point, so will you.

Under the belief that misery likes company, we started what was supposed to be a 4-month refit in Thailand, & it's now been 2 years. Along the way our contractor ripped us off for $30K. We're now hoping to get back in the water before Xmas, but early in the New Year is more likely. Coverage starts here, the condensed Readers Digest version is here, and we're now in week 107.

The new small fiberglass shop at home is almost ready. I MEAN REALY SMALL. The biggest layup that I can do is about 4'x18'. That all I need now. Just a little cleaning and ready to go. Should be starting the swim platform which is 40"x12' with recessed lights.

Just about have all the interior reupholstered four pcs left and cover the 4" thick foam for the v-birth. Next on the list is the fiberglass swim platform. Just need to order the colour matched gel coat and polyester resin. Will be starting the mold next week.

Shower pan is almost ready to make a new male mould from. Filled in holes, dings and non-skid.will be primed and sanded to 1200 grit. It should give a glass like finish to the new shower pan. The new fiberglass surround wall panels and vanity. Should be pulling the new pan in the next week or so. The admiral has a new hobby, selling 700+ mint unopened Bennie babies. Anybody want one!!! Please LoL

Just got the third and last coat of release wax on the smoothed out shower pan. I'll be laying down gelcoat for the plug then using 2 layers of continuos strand mat 3 oz. on the flats chop strand in the corners. Then the best trick I've learned from a old glass man. For a cheep mould, back up the mould with concrete. Cheap and will keep the shape for you.
