Teak Deck Sand and Recaulk

Sure beats spending $100,000 on a new teak deck (rough average of 3 bids). This is on a 1992 Wauquiez Centurion with original decks. 80 grit was used after the old caulk was removed and seams reefed. After the caulk cures, we will go over it again lightly with 120 grit.

No, that is one of the worst things you can do to a deck. The oil will attract more dirt, which requires more cleaning, which shortens the life of the deck.

Semco sealer would work, but I simply cannot stand the smell of that chemical that seems to last for weeks.

Clean salt water and Teak Deck Systems cleaner is the mildest. Use a white 3M scrub pad across the grain.

Baja Naval in Ensenada Mexico quoted just under $100k. The wood alone is around $40k, and every fitting on the deck has to be removed along with the mast. Shocking, but that is the number.

Looks great. I did my 47 ft years ago. Replaced probably 600 screws and plugs. My guy (Annapolis/Florida) didn't sand it at all until after the new caulking was in and cured. Then belt sanded most of it for a nice flush look. The whole job was less than $3.5k if IRC. 15 years ago though.

If you watch some old movies with the crew cleaning the Teak decks, they are on there knees using a block of PUMIS which is FLAT, why ?, because the flat block does not scrub out the SOFT growth rings, which leaves a corrugated surface, to day one can use a 3M scrub pad attached to there applicator, how many boats have I seen walking the docks with ruined decks because they used a BRISTEL brush and I would NOT use and Teak oil, as it attrackes dirt and will turn black, best to clean with salt or fresh water and some soap, dish washing soap works fine

How are your bungs holding up? Mine are falling out-- they are very thin --- approx. 2mm. LOTS of screw heads showing.

You have a lot of work ahead of you. I have replaced at least 300 or more in my deck. Remove your old screw, countersink deeper and use a new screw. Dip it in epoxy first, then insert a new bung. If the screw breaks, which a lot of mine did, there is a special screw extractor that does a decent job. UnScrew-Ums - Broken Screw Extractors – T & L Tools Other than that fill the with a little epoxy and insert the new plug. Most decks are caulked and screwed. The screw holds down the plank until the caulk sets.

You have another method for replacing the caulking. I need to do this and am dreading it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
