Teak Deck Replacement Foolishness

Now, I'm not quite sure whether I wan't to tackle a Teak deck, but (BUT) if I did, I would like to glue the Teak down - no screws.

While much of the process for an adhered teak deck makes sense to me, there still are bits of information that I seem to be missing:

1. What type of adhesive is use to attach one strip to the last (edge to edge)?
2. What type of surface preparation is necessary - for both the Teak and the deck?
3. What type of adhesive is used to glue the Teak to the deck?
4. Will I be able to work with kiln dried Teak and bend the strips into place before anchoring them? Or, am I going to be forced to steam them first?

Has anyone gone through this process? I would really like to get as complete a picture as possible.

Contact TDS (Teak Decking Systems) and ask away. They get paid to answer these questions and have all the time in the world. They will have solid info you can rely on.


However, remember that all old growth teak is gone or prohibitively expensive. All that's left is plantation teak, which sucks. Unless you can score some old teak, I wouldn't go there with real teak at all.

I did this for a living once....

The margin is the seamless border around the section. These pieces are fit end to end perfectly and superglued together. All teak is epoxyed to the deck. The planks are glued down with spacers then everything is caulked and sanded. You shouldn't glue the planks end to end but leave the same space as between the planks and stagger the spaces from plank to plan in a neat pattern. The normal.curve of the deck should not be a problem for bending the planks, sand and lead bags are your friend for. Holding everything down

When you say superglued, do you mean actual cyanoacrylate?

Could you share the type of epoxy you were using?

TDS supplies a proprietary thickened epoxy for bonding their shop-built panels to the deck. I have used this with excellent results. 3M 5200 also works very well for bonding teak to a deck.

Hi Terra Nova,

The adhesive I believe you are referring to is their proprietary FFE-200. They have told me that it is also flexible enough to move with the expansion and contraction of the Teak.

Unless you value your time at $0/hr - send Teak Decking System a CAD drawing of your decks and they'll send you back custom panels to glue down. It's not cheap but nothing about teak decks is cheap - unless you sail your boat to Asia and have it done there.

Hi CarlF,

I did contact them. They are already familiar with the shape of my deck. They said that may have a way to put together a deck that could be glued down as a panel - despite the slightly domed contour shape of the deck. Apparently, this is a relatively new offering.

I am waiting for an estimate.

1. Sell your boat with teak deck
2. Buy another one, without teak deck
3. Refit what's needed.
4. Enjoy.

Ouch. I am also in the boat market still searching - teak deck, condition no matter, is a deal breaker for me. Cheapest re-teak possibilities I see for a 30'-er in Europe is in the 5k+€ range. In the "developed world" (US, Western EU) prepare for worse, Thailand, MX can be cheaper but still the same range as e.g. a complete engine replacement.
