Teak & ash vener plywood flooring

I have had to rip out the floor on Insatiable. The old floor was 1/2" ply with non-skid linoleum. I am thinking of replacing the floor with marine ply with teak and ash veneer.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences with this material that they would care to share?

First of all... It is marine teak and holly. Sean did the rehab on his sole so he is the go to guy.

I would make sure you apply LOTS of top coat to protect the relatively fragile veneers.

Jef is correct. These days the veneer is amazingly thin. maybe only half as think as they used to be. The cutting tools are just that much better but ffar less room for error on your part. The good news is marine plywood is very stable. Mine is 25 years old and held up just fine. Some wear spots but not through the finish. Personally, I like the gloss varnish look, but you need to consider what look you want on your own. There is I think 2 lower gloss levels to pick from. A satin finish can look real nice depnding on the rest of the interior.

I opted for one of those new laminate floors. Looks like teak and holly but a lot more durable, no upkeep whatsoever.

Thanks fro the response, guys. I know that teak & holly is more traditional, but down here in the middle of the antarctic ocean (i.e. Tasmania), it is actually hard to get, and teak and ash (2" teak, 1/4" ash) is more readily available and cheaper. Sorry, don't have a link. It was an option on the Beneteau I ordered. It's about 5/8 of an inch and tough as nails. Heavier than plywood and completely impervious to water. There is a marine floor called Everwear and Hunter's use it. I don't know if mine is Everwear. Here's a a picture of it.

Holly is a very light coloured hardwood (whiter than oak & ash), which doesn’t take a permanent dark stain when wet. This is it’s prime advantage over ash. A good urethane varnish will protect the ash from staining.

I've recently seen some in use and short of getting down and inspecting it at about 6" one couldn't tell it from the real thing!
