Teach me about Zincs
Relatively new boat to me. Racing sailboat so perhaps that's why no zinks (increased drag?) but wondering if I should install one. She is in salt water 4 months and pulled in the winter.

Re: Teach me about Zinks
First lesson: it's spelled "zincs"!
It would hep if you told us what kind of boat, what hulll material, does it have an inboard engine, if so what material is the shaft and the prop?
All those factors will contribute to the need for anodic protection.

Re: Teach me about Zinks
Yep, they're all but mandatory. At least if you value your prop, & a few other key bits.
Basic idea behind them. Any metal immersed in water will be exposed to some current, & some oxygen, thus causing a couple of types of corrosion to take place. Which, some metals corrode much, much easier than do others. With zinc being one which corrodes more easily than almost all of the common ones out there. So that when connected to a prop shaft, or a metal hull, it corrodes instead of the prop or hull.
See; galvanic corrosion, stray current corrosion, galvanic scale, electrical potential, how a battery functions, anodes.

Re: Teach me about Zinks
If you have no metal in the water - outboard engine, no exposed metal in keel or rudder shaft or bearings, no metal thru hulls, no lightening protection, then you need no zinc.
If you have ANY metal, a zinc will preserve it. Hopefully attached close to the metal or bolted directly to the metal if possible.
Two or more different metal parts need more than one zinc - the effect is similar to an umbrella - protects the surrounding area only - with less protection as it gets further away.

Re: Teach me about Zinks
I love when a forum post is framed as a demand or an order. How about a question when asking for help? Would you use the same syntax walking up to a group of people standing around in a marina? probably not.

Still, that's no excuse for bad manners and an obvious lack of effort on your part to learn enough to ask a legitimate question about "ZINCS".

Re: Teach me about Zinks
You are really asking about how to avoid corrosion of dissimilar metals submerged in water.
Since zinc alloy is commonly used on submerged metals on fiberglass boats in salt water, 'zincs' became the slang term for 'anodes'. But zinc alloy is not the only metal used- depending upon several variables...
Google is your friend. Search for 'anodic protection for sailboats' and you will find plenty to educate yourself.
Here is one article for example.
Best wishes figuring out what is best for your vessel.
Cheers! Bill

Did it dawn on you, English may not be his first language? Even if it is so what?

A Zinc anode will supply Cathodic protection to dissimilar metals submerged in water.
