TBT Antifouiling and dessalinator\watermaker

Does anyone here know if a boat is with TBT paint or having around are boats with TBT paint makes your dessalinator/wm useless for producing drinking (safe) water ?

e.g. if you are in crowded anchorage in the Caribbean does this make you dessalinator obsolete for drinking water ? ( same beeing around big ships > 23m or military crafts that are allowed to still use TBT )

I think your going to get some interesting responses, but you do raise an interesting question that I haven't though of, and not just for the banned TBT paint.

I have no idea myself.

a friend in 1998 was anchored in his giles 52 ketch before his big adventures began, and he was making our coffee with sd bay water in a hazzard area wherein there had been dumped by uscg, many old batteries. there was also the capping of th e toxic sludge left by former manufacturing plants building airplanes(convair cove).... pcbs and all kindsa good yummies.
we didnt die. i am still alive and none the worse for wear. he was also proud of having added extra tbt to his antifouling paint....

Re: TBT Antifouiling and dessalinator\watermaker

I have switched to drinking my whiskey neat, just to avoid this problem.

in areas where there is an abundant rum supply I would suggest using coconut water as a mixer to avoid this problem

if you have a catamaran you will be fine as tin being a "heavy metal" normally sinks quite quickly, but deeper draft monos need to be more careful...................

Re: TBT Antifouiling and dessalinator\watermaker

You just knew someone had to have made a research paper out of this

http://www.socopse.se/download/18.3c...376/SR+TBT.pdf

They start discussing RO about page 30. This is freshwater RO for the removal of TBT as opposed to salt water RO, but the process mechanics are the same. Their opinion (not backed by scientific sample data) is that RO removes TBT, but that the waste brine is then more concentrated in TBT, so disposal of the brine becomes an issue (the purpose of the research was in removing TBT pollutants rather than just moving them). There is a table about RO removal of other pollutants that you may find interesting.

BTW: for humans 93mg TBT per cubic meter is enough to get damaged your internal organs... less then that should be OK

Re: TBT Antifouiling and dessalinator\watermaker

A video on this cruiser forum , produced by a yachtsman / supplier of water makers explains , that the filtration is so fine that if your neighbor was emptying his holding tanks next door to you , it would be filtered out by your W/M . Not a great thought , but not a problem . Cant remember the thread .

Yes, but.
There is always a but, right?
But bacteria and dissolved heavy metals are different in terms of "filtering"?

Re: TBT Antifouiling and dessalinator\watermaker

TBT paint is banned almost everywhere, of course. Sort of like lead based paint is

Re: TBT Antifouiling and dessalinator\watermaker

In the past, one could buy "TBTF" in a 4 or 6 oz jar, elsewhere in the world ! and a few oz would be added to a gallon.

Odds are that the tin in the water doesn't exceed the limits unless you are below a boat coated with it and licking the hull. Then factor in that the watermaker removed 90% or so of what there is in the water.

So unless you are seeing dead fish floating all around you I would consider the watermaker output safe to drink.

A gallon of Sea Hawk's Biotin TBT anti fouling paint weighs about 11 pounds. Of that, 65% is zinc and TBT. You do the math.
