Takin the decks and awlgrip down to glass

Know there are a variety of opinions on how to do this effectively, somewhere between chemical peels and grinding disks I would love to make it as easy as possible. We will be removing all hardware, sanding peeling grinding off all topside paint and awlgrip to start patching out nasty messy holes with rotten balsa

Why are you taking it down to the glass??? Should just need to taper the edges so you can laminate them back after the core is replaced and sand to provide 'tooth' for the new paint.

I had to grind off the gelcoat on the deck of my old boat because it was too thick and kept cracking. Used a 3000 rpm max sander/polisher and a 9" foam disk with 100 grit paper. The foam disk and relatively fine sandpaper made gouging almost a non issue. Need the relatively low rpm to keep the heat build up down. Faster grinders will melt the glass and are way harder to control. Was surprizingly easy and quick to do though VERY messy. Had to wash down the neighbors boats to get the FRP dust off.

Orbital sander with 80 grit will remove paint and clean spider crackes quick.
Then repair with epoxy, short hair frp bodyfill as finish skimcoat, sand to finish texture, prime and paint.
Sand between coat with 200 or better last sand is 400, then last coat for super smooth topsides and or decks.
Kiwi finish for non slip or use addetive with brightsides.

I'm taking it down to the glass cause she needs it because there are spider cracks on the deck where the PO drilled holes? But mostly cause the awlgrip is chipping the deck paint is cracking an chipping and if I am going to be cutting holes and maybe not doing the best job of repairing it, filler and awlgrip can make a awful job look reasonably okay.

Are you doing the deck or the topside or both?
