Ta Chiao

I'm looking into a Ta Chiao 47 to buy. The boat needs some work. AC Refrigeration, rub rail and some electrical equipment is missing. My question is how well wear these boats constructed and what quality of workmanship and fittings can be expected?

The rub rail is a minor project. How are the decks and hatch combings?

The rub rail may or may not be a minor project....depending on whats on the other (in) side, and if you want to repair it in the same way it was originally installed.
I removed both of mine completely and it meant gaining access to the nuts (spaced about every 8in) on the inside of the hull.
Big job.
It may or may not need to be replaced at all....have you considered just cleaning up the remaining end and not replacing the rest?
I cant really tell for sure but from the pictures it looks like its damaged it a couple different places.
As far as the build quality of an 84 CT....I cant say..... I can say that my 78 CT has a well built solid FG hull but had wet spots in the deck core, and rot around the windows in the salon.
I also had considerable rot in the bulkhead under the leaky companion way.
The interior wood work is exceptional.
Much of the original SS fitting was dodgy.
Thru-hulls were excellent proper tapered valves.
If it has a wooden mast and it's painted, take care....the rot is hard to see.
If the standing rigging is original it may be getting dated and want changing.

Have a good look behind the electrical panel....many boat of this age could use rewiring$$$...mine did.
Rudder post quadrant and all that sort was/is was rock solid.
Port hold gaskets were all dried out and leaked....bad.

She has an aluminum two piece mast. Asking 50 K. Think that is why to much.

Ok, it all comes down to how well she was maintained. The interior of mine was beautiful but the exterior was badly neglected. After I bought her the only big surprise was the rudder. When I removed the rudder for inspection were the SS shaft went into the Silicon bronze gougon the shaft was 1/3 gone from electrolysis. So a new one piece shaft and rudder was installed ($$).
The hulls are built thick and strong and laid by hand. I've never seen a ct with blisters.( there may be some out there but I've never seen one). The US boats built in the early 80's were experimenting with thinner lay ups and used chopper guns run by inexperienced people, reputable boat yards build some bad boats at this time. I would never buy a US built early 80's boat. In my mind thick and old is better than thin and old.
All new electrical wiring, batts, rigging, sails, bow sprit, samson posts, cockpit hatches and plumbing. All ready for going off shore again........ Then I had a rush of oxygen to the brain and went to a larger boat. ??? I stand by my decision but am questioning my sanity! Hello.... everbody is questioning my sanity!

is a welll constructed cruising boat.
they are just jellus. go for it!!!!
gudgeons and pintles happen. not deal breakage material. not much is , with these.

Did you have the boat surveyed? what would be your top price to pay for the boat?

No, he is sealing it "as wear is". looked at the boat and found it have some water damage from not being opened in the past year. Deck will need some work. Offered 10K. Sealer came down to 20K. I would not move up any more. He re-listed boat at 35K or best offer.

will the teak deck need to come off? does she have a lot of soft spots? what would be your estimate to get her going again? could she be sailed/moved?

She is in the water, with lots of growth on the hull. Motor is suppose to be good. Batteries did not have a charge. I'm thinking it will take about 30k to 40k to get her back in shape.
