Swing Keel Corrosion

Hello all,

I am considering buying a Catalina 25 with a swing keel. The boat is currently out of the water and appears to be in decent condition except for the keel. The paint has chipped away from over half of the keel and is heavily corroded.

The seller said that its just a matter of scraping away the corroded layer, possibly sanding down, and repainting. According to him, he does this annually. From my untrained eye, it seemed that the corrosion was only superficial and there wasn't any deep holes or major chips. However, I understand that it can eat into the interior unseen.

So my question, would this be a deal breaker for an inexpensive 1978 Catalina, or is it just a matter of proper maintenance to get it back in shape?

Any advise is appreciated,
Ryan
