Re: street lantern post...use as mast?

not as uncommon as you may think, alot of home built aussie yachts used sydney lamp posts as masts.

though care is needed when attaching fittings to the alumillium, and preventing corrosion.

generally 5-6 mm wall thickness is good for a 8-10m mast.

though would have thought finding a second hand mast and rigging from a 30 footer, including the main sail might be more cost effective, check out boat yards for deals on scraped/wrecked yachts.

are you saying I can use a mast from a 30ft boat???
because theres at least 5 or 6 of them in the boat year where I optained my boat...I see them streched out on the carcases of irecuperable boats...I presume they can be cheap??

Re: street lantern post...use as mast?

yes an 8 meter mast off a 30 footer would be ideal, especially if you could get the boom, rigging and a sail.

though check the optimum size on the designed size of mast for your boat, may only have to make bigger/longer spreaders for it to fit your yacht.

I dont know what your woodworking skills are but fabricating a new mizzen out of wood is not as hard as it looks. By the time you get done messing around with trying to put the lampost on the boat you could have fabbed a new one out of wood and keep the beauty of the origional stick.
