I am getting to install some shelves in the storage area behind our port bench. (Princess Di. - my better half - is too short to reach the bottom of the storage area by going through the lift out shelf on top.) The shelf installation will require that I cut an access door behind the back of the bench seat and install a vertical partition inside the storage area. My question: should I install some type of cushioning material between the outer hull and the new partition before tabbing it in? If so, what should I use?

Assuming you have a fibergalss hull, you will want to glass some blocks to the inside of the hull to secure the bulkhead. This is not a hard project, but requires a little bit of knowledge. You will want to use a good rot resistent wood for the blocks, and I would recommend coating it with penetrating epoxy. you will also want to coat any end grains on the bulkhead, especially where it meats the hull, with penetrating epoxy. This is especially critical if the bulkhead is plywood. Aside from this, you do not need anything between the hull, and the bulkhead.
