Question Steering options?

What are my options for steering systems? Conventional systems are cable, pulley/cable, hydraulic etc. I'm considering the Aziprop from Fisher Panda and it'll rotate 180 degs. This will pretty much eliminate everything listed above except pulley/cable systems. Are there any other options? Electro/servo maybe? Links would be appreciated.

I imagine your steering station to be quite far from your rudder post? Rack and pinion are problem out the question.
Kind regards,

12-15 feet max depending on how far we stretch the trawler. The problem I'm struggling with is the 180 deg swing for a quadrant, not gonna happen.

On a powerboat with their smaller rudders I'd say go with the wrap-around cables (P/S) for the 180º action. (careful with backing). Adjustable backlash too!

That'd probably work Dan. I was looking for hyd motors last night that'd work with a standard Seastar helm pump. Trying to find torque specs from Fisher Panda on their Aziprop is like finding hens teeth though.

I also thought about mounting the motors on top of the rudder post and driving direct but that would preclude an easy "emergency" tiller or steering hook up.

Hydraulic would be cool because you don't have long runs - if you want really complicated you could make it fly by wire and only have an electric transducer behind the steering station - whoo hoo. Let's over engineer the crud out of it!

Have you considered something like this:

MerCruiser Axius | Change Course.

I saw another one like it that allowed you to hold the bow pointed at a a bouy while doing circles around it but I can't find the link.

That's the Coast Guard way and that's me! Let's have at it! Then when it's all said and done we'll crunch the numbers and realize I can't afford the solution and end up goin' with a clothes line pulley and some clothes line wire! *sigh*

Disk-Quadrants could give you the 180+ degrees you need. Delmarrey's got the right idea. Sorry- I just like the simplicity.
If you want to get really decent control that's clean and positive you could go for Jefa's transmission system or possibly the Lewmar (formerly the very agricultural Whitlock) equivalent.
