Re: Steel Boats

It's sabredancing

It's at the bottom of his post.

I've met SabreKai in real life. We speak the same language when it comes to a preference for steel and he's taken on a bigger renovation than I have. I considered buying his boat when I was only looking at the outside.

Re: Steel Boats

Thanks Marc!

Marc and I are pretty close as far as locale goes, so I've been down to see Alchemy. Marc, You gotta get some time this summer and come have a boo. Although I gotta say, the blog is pretty good at explaining the joy of gutting a 38 foot boat. At least I'm done gutting for now and moving back into fixing things. I expect to be launching soon with a gutted cabin but I'll be afloat again.

Re: Steel Boats

Many years ago we were sailing back from bermuda heading to Norfolk. We were in a Nor easter that swept a large "propane" tank like object that was about 40 ft in length off of a Navy ship. We hit it at night, it rose up and came across the deck taking out stantions along the way. Oh yea we were on a 43 ft steel ketch doing about 7 knots. In November!! Still here to talk about it!! Presently doing a major refit on the boat because I cant give her up.

Re: Steel Boats

OK, I have resurrected a very old thread, but the same Damion 2 that was talked about in this thread is back on the Seattle Craigslist for $14K. As has been discussed at length, I have never seen a price fluctuate as much as this boat. I still think it is an excellent boat, but steel and a lifting keel probably scare most Americans away. Poverty and too many projects scare me away. _____Grant.

Re: Steel Boats

Interesting, I’ve seen one Damien 2 but it was 50’ schooner w/lifting keel. And there is a 50’er for sale on yachtworld, fin keel, for about $150,000.

That is a lot of boat for the price. If built like the others it has a fully round hull with the plates welded in a lapstrake fashion, overlapping. The one I saw was used as an expedition boat and was hauled up on the beach for the winter with a dozer using log rollers. That one also supposedly had a Ss deck.

I’ve got my eye on a Steel boat that is for sale, but is not being handled right. If the owner sees the boat he wants and gets serious about price I might buy it. It it would have to be a distress sale condition. I’ve got 2 now, so I’m not overly anxious.
