Steadying sail...

I've dreamt of owning a yawl rig off and on for years, having sailed a couple and discovering that, however useful or not the sail is underway, it makes a glorious steadying sail at anchor. Especially the tiny jigger yawls, with just enough sail cut board-flat and cinched in tight, the boat lies nose to wind and calm as can be.

It's not an option to re-rig my boat, but I've been considering adding a wind generator on a mast at the stern. And I was just wondering if it would be possible to add a small riding sail to the wind generator mast.

Most of the masts like this I've seen seem temporarily stepped, perhaps removable for passages. I've never actually worked with one so I don't really know anything about 'em. Anyone have experience?

Given the height of most pole mounted wind generators, and the fact that any riding sail would have to be set beneath the turbine, I don't think it would be practicable.

Last boat had a mast mounted windgen and you really could not get anything big enough under the blades. The height would have been well below the Bimini. You don't want the mast any taller than necessary so at about the best spot is where the windgen goes and that would be where a riding sail would go as well.

I would think you could rig something using the main halyard and a batten in the foot of the riding sail, then guy the clew and tack.
