Starting a diesel that's been idle 10yr on prospective boat?

I'm still waiting for the description of make and model as well length.

Did it have engine that you anticipated and were there compression release levers? Did you take pictures.

I know of a few tug boat captains that do this as standard practice so that if any water has made it's way back into the cylinders, the hydraulic lock in that cylinder will simply stop the motor from spinning under the force of the starter, rather than bend a rod from hydraulic lock stopping the motor under the force of combustion in other cylinder(s).

I have learned a lot in this thread, but if it were me, I would postpone starting it until after an overhaul...I'd crank it, yes, to be sure it's not frozen and give it a close visual inspection. At this (and my) end of the price spectrum, I'd follow earlier advice to

Not kidding but sometime ago I was following a similar post and after everything was said and done the OP, who had released all the information, decided to go for the boat and make an offer.
Guess what? Too much of a coincidence, but when he did, a boat that was sitting for years had just been sold.

Well more of a concern of said current yard seeing info ect so I'd rather not post info make model ect ect. Also could t blame anyone for making an offer on a boat possible cheap boat that I posted on. After all I know how it goes with all you ner do wells and do t trust you farther than I can throw me anchors ! I'll keep you updated. Currently in negotiations with said yard owner whom has known the boat for over 40 years. I'll keep ya posted as things draw to a close.

I wouldn't trust the meter either, but she sure looks clean. And if the boat has been in storage for 10 years it was obviously put up proper, at least from a moisture prevention standpoint.
