Re: Starting a diesel that's been idle 10yr on prospective boat?

Just back from taking some stink boaters around the BVIís for 10 dayís. What luck we had a 2008 44i jenny with only 9 hours on the meter.

Ya right. On a charter boat

Re: Starting a diesel that's been idle 10yr on prospective boat?

I bought a boat some years ago with a Perkins 4-108. It had set on the hardstand for at least 10 years. The motor had 100 hours on it and no sigh of being repowered. I changed the oil and topped off the diesel tank. Put in new batteries and made sure the coolant was full. Also, checked the old impeller and replaced with new. The motor fired right up. Later on I polished the diesel but that is another story. You should take a sample of the motor oil and send it to a lab to be sure there are no metal fragments in it. Your local surveyer can give you the lab contact info.

You don't need a lab to check for metal fragments. You can cut the oil filter open and wash the paper in light solvent and run the resulting crud through a coffee filter. Passing a magnet over the residue will tell if it is ferrous or non ferrous metal.
The same technique can be used for the oil pan drainings.

Wouldn't it be simpler just to mail a sample off?

I would definitely try to get the yard to start the motor for you, if they are the owner, they may be more motivated than you think to get rid of the vessel, if you don't ask the answer will definitely be no.

More likely 10,009 hours, surely?

Unless there is a significant surprise.... Appick should be getting one of those "once in a lifetime" deals.... Not a bazzilion dollar boat... but it sounds like a great boat for pennies on the dollar...

Unless of course I find it before appick closes the deal...
(just kidding of course)

Of course it would but if you find obvious signs of metal you can save yourself the cost of a lab analysis.

I think Appick found two masked men (Skip and HappyMd) behind the bush looking at the boat and they got into a fight....
