Standing Rigging, or Lack Of. . . .

i purchased a wee 20ft trailer sailer. the problem i have is that the majority of standing and running rigging has gained legs and disappeared, apart from the forestay. every cloud and all that. anyways, what is the best method to get the correct measurements for new rigging? do i just hoist the mast with ropes and measure from there? what size turnbuckles would you guys suggest?

all advice is greatly appreciated.

I would start out by looking up the boat someplace like sailboatdata.com they often have most of the measurements need to figure out rigging so long as your rig has the original spec mast. If that does not pan out i would have chat with a good rigging shop.

Good luck

Get someone who knows math. They can calculate the length of shrouds and stays from measurements of the deck chainplate locations and length to tangs on the mast. Good thing I married a math teacher as she did the calculations for the rigging on our boat and they were spot on.

Failing the above, just step the mast, hold in place with halyards and measure how long the wires need to be.

Cheers guys, I have been blessed with the ability of over thinking things, so even the most mediocre task turns Into to a science project.

I'll just raise the mast with ropes and measure from there.

Would 12mm turnbuckles be adequate for a wee 20 ft yacht?

I saw mentioned that a cal 20 uses 1/8 inch back stays. So i am guessing 12mm turnbuckles are way oversized

Try to find an owners manual for your boat that you can download.

Re: standing rigging, or lack of. . . .

Both my 19' and 22' use 1/8th, so again.... 12mm is WAY oversized... I think a turnbuckle with 6mm threading is fairly common...

Welcome to CF Mr. Psycho !

Re: standing rigging, or lack of. . . .

Cheers lads! I'll get some 6mm ones ordered up.

Once I finally get the rigging measured up, what gauge of wire should I get it made in? I'm confident the rigging manufacturer would advise what's best, but there is no harm in getting some advice.

Thanks for the warm welcome, please be prepared for more daft questions. I grew up sailing wee dinghies so this cabin malarkey is all new to me!

Love it!

You are already fitting in nicely here my friend!

3mm is a smidge bigger than 1/8", but boy does that sound tiny saying it aloud! I've only bought metric wire much bigger... Looked at a couple rigging supply places and smallest metric is 6mm??? There's 5 imperial sizes smaller available...

I think you will find the malarkey of a small cabin very useful...

25.4 mm (one inch):8=3.175.
So 3mm is a smidge smaller than 1/8".
Happy imperial measures😀

" its not the size of your mast that matters, its the motion of the ocean" usually said by sailors with a small mast.

Re: Standing Rigging, or Lack Of. . . .

Hi there Psychosaffa ... welcome to the forum.
My very first sailboat was a 20' CYGNUS fin-keel day-sailer, designed by George Hinterhoeller of Niagara, Ontario, Canada. He was probably better known as the designer of the bigger 24' SHARK family club racer cruiser, and also as one of the founding principals of C&C Yachts.
But back to the day-sailer.
The CYGNUS used a 2.5" x 3.5" tear-drop section aluminum spar that was about 22 o.a.l. It sported a fractional rig, having 178.14sq.ft. sail area. Rigging was 1/8" s.s. shrouds (uppers and lowers) and a fore-stay ... There was no mainstay (back-stay). Turnbuckles were 1/4" thread.
I would think these sizes would probably suit your boat too unless you have way more taller spar and sail area than the CYGNUS.
Hope this is of some help, have fun 'learning the ropes', we all started there at some time in our lives and still learning, every time we leave the dock.

Re: Standing Rigging, or Lack Of. . . .

cheers Bob
the displacement of my Matilda 20 is almost 3 times that of the Cygnus, but with the same size sail area.

cool, i have the turnbuckles ordered up, and now have an idea of shroud diameter, so am slowly making headway!

am already enjoying the forum, seems to be good banter and a wealth of knowledge!
