Stainless Steel Fittings and Exhaust on Transom: Rust Stains After 31 Years

The steel exhaust and several fittings are rusting on the transom, but not because they are of low quality stainless. They have just been there forever in the splash zone.

The Captain has removed all for inspection and they are in reasonable condition. These items are not rusted through, they are just starting to stain -down the transom surface.

Per the Captain's request, I have a few questions:

What do you folks recommend to clean these fittings (or other like conditions around the exterior of the boat) and keep the rust stains from running down the outside of the transom?

Before the captain puts the exhaust back in, any suggestions for cleaning and coating it to prevent rust stains starting again? The transom is solid fiberglass. If he can find a plastic exhaust, he will use that instead of reusing the steel exhaust.

He is throwing away the fittings and having the holes plugged since we are not using those fittings.

The boat yard crew will be sanding and removing rust and other stains from the hull next week.

Thanks!

phospheric acid or ospho works well on rust stains, then polish glass with a silicon based wax

You can use fiberglass exhaust pipe. The flexible hose will fit over this pipe. Laminate a piece into the transom and connect the hose on the inside. Let it stick 1" out on the outside and mount one of those rubber flaps over it.

ciao!
Nick.
