Keep in mind that polished tubing is preferred.... and yes more money. Plain stainless can rust at sea quite well. Don't ask how I know... :>)

Cal 31 - OD is 1", 1/16" wall, polished SS
I will inventory all available fittings when I get to the boat this WE.

I did my railings on my boat with SS tube from Taco Metals in St. Pete...

Aluminum and Stainless Steel Tube @ tacomarine.com

In 1" tube I would think.046 wall would be fine for many uses. However if you are making a big system for solar panels etc too... bigger OD gets you more strength quickly than thicker wall.

I buy all my plate 316 SS, and 316SS Tubing for a buck a pound at the scrap yard. The scrapyard is across the street from Bombardier Factory that builds Trains and streetcars. So they dump a lot of scrap. Aluminum is also a buck a pound. Check all scrap recycling yards. Especially near Factories.
