Re: SOS Help please!

When you say you lost it, do you mean it has been misplaced (or stolen etc) or has it simply broken?

If broken, you will have the old parts to copy from.

If you don't have the old bits, then simply look at your other stays, they will be the same diameter and type. Look at the chainplate fitting and the masthead fitting. This will give you all the information you need to work out what fittings are required for a replacement stay.

Or take some photos and get along to the nearest rigger (or even the nearest chandler) and they will sort what you need.

Re: SOS Help please!

It's broken and pretty twisted up. Maybe it can be remade but is there any used parts dealers out there?

Has to be some old boats being parted out.

Re: SOS Help please!

That's one piece of hardware that I wouldn't buy used. I presume that you know that rigging is usually replaced after 20 years, never mind after 50 years.

Exactly!
Please use new rigging...
Otherwise you will looking for a replacement mast next!

And check the rest of your existing rig...

Re: SOS Help please!

Joe-
It sounds like you are looking to replace a TURNBUCKLE or other discrete fitting, and not the BACKSTAY itself. The backstay is usually wire cable, terminated to a turnbuckle or other adjustable fitting which is installed to the hull.
And if that's what you are looking to replace, marine bronze fittings, or chromed marine bronze fittings, will last for decades. Making one up from titanium won't accomplish much, unless you're an avid racer with a stock of titanium on hand.
