Sikaflex and Airport Security

I have been using black Sikaflex for years to glue my shoes back together and it works great. I glue the sole back in place or when my sandal straps slide out, I glue them back and they stay.
I had glued the soles on the shoes I was wearing when we went through security at the Singapore airport on our flight back to the US last week when I was chosen to be wiped for traces of explosives including my carry-on and my shoes. The analyzer’s alarm went off not once but all six times it was tried and the problem was narrowed down to my shoes.
The police were called and we were told we may miss our flight. Three gun carrying officers arrived and began peppering my wife and I with questions, eventually filling out two pages. I was taken to a secure area and padded down yet again.
The only explanation I can think of is the Sikaflex and told them so. I was asked to write it down on paper for them and one officer spent considerable time on his cell phone repeating everything I was saying. I was asked about construction sites and explosives but I had not been near any that I knew of.
All concerned were very nice and courteous and eventually we were cleared for boarding at the last minute.

Do you happen to remember which machine they used for the trace detection? Maybe a description of what it looked like? (square box, sloped front, or overgrown laptop?)

Seems like they handled it properly and I'm glad you made your flight.

The particle analyzer used was a table top machine about 5 inches wide, 5 inches high, and 14 inches long. The wipe was about 3 inches square and reminded me of the material wet wipes are made of. After wiping, the pad was placed into a slot at the top of the machine and it took about 10 seconds for it to respond.
The officials were very courteous and the whole affair was like getting your taxes audited except I had nothing to hide.

I get that sort of thing all the time, but I am usually covered in all sorts of powders from work. I've found that when I hear the beep start naming off all the substances they've found and they'll be a lot more forgiving.

That describes either the Sabre2000 or the VaporTracer. Both out of date units that have issues with interferants. Sorry but you're a victim of budgets not allowing for newer equipment.
Still, glad to see they handled it correctly by asking questions and performing further searches.

Hey Mark - all the Non Aussies just don't have the extra Vegemite gene in their makeup which is what they need to appreciate the joy.

Funny though when I worked in Chicago there was a guy there from Texas who I introduced to Vegemite and told him to have a thin spread but he went the opposite and laid it on thick and used it on everything incuding BBQ meat & sausages. Just loves the stuff.
