From 20 feet away , it's hard to tell shiny maroon paint from wood. So give it a couple of coats of varnish to stop any paint from soaking into the wood, then several coats of high gloss maroon paint,then if you still want to carry the illusion further, give the paint a couple of coats of varnish. Varnishing the wood before painting stops the paint from soaking in . That way , if you ever want to return to varnish to sell the boat, you don't have the problem of getting the paint out of the wood. Paint stripper will take it to bare , clean wood.

Let me get this straight... strip and sand down to natural bare timber, 10-12 coats in a day, and nothing for around 9 years? Sounds almost too good to be true...

I went much further than painting. I removed the teak handrails and brows along to cabin top. Replaced the handrails with stainless. There is still a little teak at the pointy end and the square end. Too much modification required to remove it, so painting has been on my list.

Besides not having to maintain the brightwork, the "updating" is striking. People were amazed when I first finished the job, new LP paint and all, that it was not a brand new boat. So I relate to "looking like a modern vessel".

to all you folks who love finishing brightwork:

go find a defever 41 trawler about 25 yrs. old, look at all the teak brightwork, try to figger out how to scrape/sand the trim thats impossible to get at w/ more than 2 fingers and get back to me about the "love" and "zen" of doing it. sure, if i had a sailboat w/ a few easy-to-get-at pieces of teak, i'd varnish/finish it too....BUT I DON'T!!! pics to follow when i figure out how to work this damn camera...

Try Citristrip next time instead of the heatgun. We stripped and Island Packet 38 in 1 day including toe rails and grabrails. We are Teak Oil believers now. Neither Cetol or Varnish prived the longevity or ease of maintainence.

Will the oil come off on clothing? I like seeing the grain of the wood through the varnish, but with over 300 feet of rub rails, and hand holds I was giving painting a thought.........i2f

48hrs normally is enough soak in time for that not to be a worry...
