Severe Oxidation of Paint

I bought a used fiberglass sailboat. Red. Previous owner had terminal cancer and boat was neglected 3-4 years. Paint is very oxidized. Wanted to PoliGlow the boat but even using PoliGlow HD prep, there is still a lot of oxidation.
Any suggestions about products and/or methods would be appreciated.

Try wet sanding with 600 or 800 grit to remove the oxidation... worked for us on very bad gel coat followed by Poly-glow.

BTW, sure that it is paint, not gel coat??

You could try this. Depending on the severity of the oxidation. The photo is just an example of one of the less expensive brands. Test a spot though and wash/dry it really good after. Some compounds leave a residue which appears bristol until the residue washes away. And others are too harsh and will leave you with swirl marks. I've witnessed top notch results with the wet-sand approach that has been mentioned earlier.

Suggest you start with the least abrasive approach first, and only get more aggressive if you really need to. A good low-speed polisher will make the job a lot easier, but it can be done by hand. You can certainly use less expensive automotive products, don't really need the more expensive marine varieties.

Polyglo and other similar products can work, but be aware that they may seriously affect your ability to paint in the future.

Are you sure it's paint? Gel coat oxidizes a lot. Especially colors like red. If it's gel coat you are in luck, it can be compounded to bring back shine. Although it may depend on how thick the gel is....

I have not found this to be true. Polyglow comes off fairly completely with alkaline based cleaners, and leaves a paintable surface.

Re: Severe Oxidation of Paint

Maine Sail has an excellent article on how to restore the luster to gelcoat. I used his expertise and the difference is amazing.

Very good to know. I've avoided Polyglow because of reports I've read.

Thanks
