Unhappy See What Happens When You Don't Double Drill

Lots of work! When you discover that not one piece of deck hardware has been double drilled. I just want to go sailing

Not entirely sure what I am looking at (aftermath of a first strike? ) - but I would expect most of the deck hardware to be through bolted (through epoxey and into backing plates - wood / steel / both.

Double drill = over sizing the first drill hole, then filling with epoxy to redrill proper hole into. No water in core that way...

Re: See What Happens When You Don't Double Drill

I guess we are looking at the rotted out core of a fiberglass deck, the rot being caused by water ingress through the deck fittings not being "double drilled".

One way to prevent such water ingress is to drill the first hole rather oversized and fill with say epoxy. Once this is set, then the hole is re-drilled with the correct (& smaller) drill and the fitting attached in the normal way.

Thats my take on the OP.

Re: See What Happens When You Don't Double Drill

After drilling the first over-sized hole (for "double drilling"), I’d also gouge out some of the inner core, to be filled with epoxy, prior to re-drilling the fitted hole. In addition to sealing the edges, this also provides some crush resistance against the fastenings (which tend to compress the sandwich when tightened).

Let's hope they all join CF after selling that first boat but they don't. My least favorite thing to see is clear silicone over the outside of portlights and through-bolted hardware. There's a double drill for you: creates work in near future and doesn't fix the problem.

Let's drink to the OP. Fie on the PO.

We do this instead of "double drilling". It's a much better technique. If you double drill you've removed the skin around the hole and are now relying on the epoxy's bond to the core, with no protection for the brittle epoxy from compression. Just drill the hole exactly the size you need and then remove the core for about 1/2" depth all around the hole. Fill with thickened epoxy to reattach the skins to each other and seal the core. I often use a router bit chucked into a cordless drill to remove the core, does a perfect job in seconds with no core remnant stuck to the skins. Thicken with cabosil for this, you wont be sanding it and you want it strong.

I know it as "drill and fill", or "what I picked up from Nigel Calder's Big Book of Avoiding Repair Errors".

Re: See What Happens When You Don't Double Drill

my deck is plywood with a fiberglass encapsulation. when it is bad, it gets replaced. so far so good. every drilled hole is prepped with cpes so it wont get water inside.
my hull is 2 inch thick solid fiberglass. no holes get drilled into that.
