I wanted to do this to attach my anchor windlass in position without mounting it on wooden blocks. I wanted a cleaner install. So a added a sloped area. I filled in the area with plywood Click image for larger version

After that I sanded. Then using bondo radiused the corners and smoothed the whole thing in. This took a few days, working a little each
day to get it looking good.Click image for larger version

The large whole to the right is for the chain to feed into the chain locker. The large hole more in the center is for electrical cables to power the windlass. They are fiberglassed as well. The 4 smaller holes are to anchor the windlass to the deck

Re: Schucker refit

After I posted the above I realized I did not lay the fiberglass cloth directly onto the plywood /resin goop build up. What I did was make a flat fiberglass layup on a glass table. This created a very flat piece of cured fiberglass. I then cut to shape using a pattern and pressed in place onto a layer of fiberglass goop. Then I fiberglass taped the edges to the hull and faired with Bondo.

The life line stanchion poles mount to holes molded into the deck. Did some investigating to make sure no water got to the side deck core. Very good news ,the side decks are solid fiberglass. The only balsa core areas are the pilot house roof( repaired) and the cabin roof ( repaired). Back to the stanchion mount holes. Spent time repairing various damaged areas around the mounting points . Click image for larger version

Added real estate around port side window openings. They we're cut to large at factory and the factory fix was just cosmetic . They needed about a 1/2 inch added all the way around.Click image for larger version

Re: Schucker refit

I did get a whole lot done in my 2 weeks of work. Applied over 2 gallons of primer on the port side decks, pilot hose sides. This is a picture after first primer application. Did not get a glamor shot after 3 more spraying sessions and getting the windows and door back in. To bad, it looked greatClick image for larger version

Very nice work. I appreciated the nice photographs. I am nearing the end of a two-year refit so I could empathize with your project.

Motor turns CW when straight 12 volts is applied from battery, reverse leads motor turns CCW.

Question is, can I control this motor using straight 12 volts from battery( no motor controller) using relays?

I gutted a bunch of old 1970,s circuit boards out of the unit. This capacitor was connected to the circuit boards. I assume it was for the motor, only other electrical load left in unit is a electromagnetic clutch to engage drive unit. Do I need it? How would I wire it up?

How to make a round hole square? I need to mount this sprocket to the top of my rudder shaft. I'm interested in any ideas on how to create a 1 inch square hole in place of the round exiting shaft hole. Needs to be a fairly accurate fit. Click image for larger version

I just ordered two Pelagic Auto pilot set ups. The primary set up will work through the existing hydraulic helm. The back up will control the Benmar drive, complete redundancy to the rudder shaft

A good machine shop should be able to mill it for you, shouldn't be expensive.

Re: Schucker refit

Fiberglass fuel tanks, Common problems? To stay out of the summer south Florida sun I'm going to abandon the outside deck work and work inside the pilot house for the next couple of months.
I cut a big access hole on top of the tank and pumped out the 50 gallons of 25 year old diesel fuel. The fuel looked amazingly good after being in the tank for so long. Not much crud at all on the tank bottom, had it cleaned up in no time.
This is a 250 gallon tank and had no baffles , not sure what to make of that. The tank appears to be in good condition inside. The fiberglass shows no deterioration . I scratched the the with a razor knife on the bottom of the tank and the material is hard. Anything else I should look for when inspecting this tank?
The tank sits between two bulkheads under the aft part of the pilot house. Attached to the fuel tank are two fiberglass water tanks, starboard and port of the fuel tank. They appear to made of the same material and are physically attached to the fuel tank and are essentially one large 3 tank unit. I plan on converting the water tanks to diesel tanks.Click image for larger version

The fix the factory came up with was half ass at best. The outside was fixed ok, the inside was crap and simply hidden with ugly trim pieces and scraps of plywood jammed in between the outer section and the liner. The big problem is that the screws holding the window on the boat are screwed into the scraps of plywood. To fix this I am repairing the inside fiberglass and building inside trim pieces that are robust enough to accept the screws coming in from the outside.Click image for larger version

These are the first batch, made from sapelli . It was fun to make them with half lap joints, very strong.
