Fiberglass
fuel tanks, Common problems? To stay out of the summer south
Florida sun I'm going to abandon the outside deck work and work inside the pilot house for the next couple of months.
I cut a big access hole on top of the tank and pumped out the 50 gallons of 25 year old
diesel fuel. The fuel looked amazingly good after being in the tank for so long. Not much crud at all on the tank bottom, had it cleaned up in no time.
This is a 250 gallon tank and had no baffles , not sure what to make of that. The tank appears to be in good condition inside. The fiberglass shows no deterioration . I scratched the the with a razor knife on the bottom of the tank and the material is hard. Anything else I should look for when inspecting this tank?
The tank sits between two bulkheads under the aft part of the pilot house. Attached to the
fuel tank are two fiberglass
water tanks, starboard and port of the
fuel tank. They appear to made of the same material and are physically attached to the fuel tank and are essentially one large 3 tank unit. I plan on converting the water tanks to
diesel tanks.
