Saltwater Wood Glue

Need some advice here. I need to do some modifications on the transom of my 1990 achilles dink, which will involve glue and bolts. Yeah, I am going to raise the transom 5 inches to accommodate a 20" shaft outboard. Yeah, yeah, I know all about the issues of doing this, so please save your fingers telling me why i shouldnt do such a thing..okay? Thanks!

Now, I plan to use bolts and glue. The bolts I got covered, its the glue that I am concerned with, and would like to hear some recommendations as to the best glue for this particular application. Regardless of needing to glue or not, Imma gonna glue anyway.

I have searched the www and read about all the different types of glue, but would prefer to hear it from my cruisers forum family, as I value, and appreciate the vast knowledge and experience that is found here.

I have a 200hp (two hundred hp) black max, that I plan to put on my 10' Achilles inflatable, so i will need to make sure the transom is reinforced adequately. Yes I know this is a bit over the top, and shouldnt be attempted, but thats what they said about going to the moon. So forgo the whys, this is crazy, retarded, wont work, etc..comments, and tell be what is the best glue for the bucks. Again Thanks!

ps. just focus on the glue

Sorry Blackoak

200hp is 150kg on a transom designed order of magnitude less thrust you are going to need divine intervention, not glue.

Epoxy would be my choice, but I would suggest you use it to build a bigger tender.

Make sure you have a PFD and a kill cord for the sea trial.

Re: Saltwater Wood Glue

I want to see video when you are done . . .

But on glue . . . epoxy would be the most common choice, Resorcinol glue would probably be the traditional wooden boat builder's choice, Plexus might be the modern boat builder's choice, and polyurethane (Gorilla glue) might be the DIY choice.

All of them will do the job if used properly (clean surfaces, tight fit, clamped until cured)

Once I put a 25hp OB on my 10' inflatable and all I needed next were wings. 200hp is going to flip that thing when you hit the throttle, if it doesn't sink first.

Re: Saltwater Wood Glue

Funny thing about Boaties....I asked what kind of glue should I use, and I get epoxy, Resorcinol, and polyurethane. I am to assume, that any epoxy, resorcinol, and polyurethane, can be used no matter what brand name they carry?

If i were to ask about an anchor, Would I get the response, "anything heavy tied to a chain or rope would be sufficent". Or would I get a brand name. like Rocna, Manson Supreme, Spade, Bruce, or Delta?

Re: Saltwater Wood Glue

Use Plexus.

I hope this 10' dink is one of those mini hydroplanes built for large outboards, otherwise yer doomed! Pics please!

Maybe just forgo the dinghy altogether and bolt a plank big enough to stand on to the front of the outboard? Same thing really....

Make sure to get a really really long tiller extension, you will need to sit as far out on the bow as possible to prevent the boat from sinking by the stern when you start to throttle up.

Actually from the threads on anchoring I've seen they'll usually tell you to get a 'modern' design over a 'plow', 'scoop' or 'fisherman style then tell you what they've had success with. I'm not sure anyone here has put an impossibly oversized motor on a boat that probably isn't rated for half the weight on the stern let alone the amount of thrust you're talking about so experience with that'll be hard to come by. My opinion would be if you want it to stay attached while you back flip is weld the sucker on. Want me to specify the alloy and supplier?

Better yet, jus nail a board across the back. It probably won't matter.

Lol, that's one of my favorites from the "Nautical Oddities" thread, I keep it handy too!
