The Challenge: Transport a 287 kg (631 lb) engine from Malaysia to Thailand (140nm as the crow flies) aboard a 36' mono hull.

Currently thinking we'll either secure the new engine in the cockpit or on the fore deck (in a cradle of some sort) - depending on final measurement of engine and said locations.

Curious if anyone here's ever attempted something like this - and if so, what lessons you might have learned? Beyond that, looking for humorous comments detailing our position on the idiot spectrum!

My guess is youre picking it up around Langkawi? Yes? Its only about 6 hours by car from Phuket to Langkawi (Satun Ferry) . It might be just as easy to do it overland.

Yes, sure, but you have to pay $$$$$$ at the Thai customs for importing the engine. Nobody cares when you bring it on your boat, normally! Langkawi island is dutyfree.

Don't forget the comment on the compass, likely it will be unusable.

I've hauled heavier loads further, but loaded them below deck, keeping an eye on the CG...watch the trim and redistribute other things accordingly... If you only get it in the cockpit fine but I would worn against the foredeck. 140 nm isn't far and a weather window prediction would be fairy easy....pick a rood one and figure 1 to 2 knots less speed overall for your float plan. secure it well and enjoy the passage. I assume you've already arranged to import papers?

Place it on a mini barge and tow it, bad weather will effect your righting on deck.

Like el pinguino sez: This engine - palletized and crated - doesn't weigh a lot. It'll be the equivalent of having a crew of three well-grown men in the cockpit at all times. Just secure her in the cockpit, which is fortuitously and conveniently a centre one, and pick you weather window. 140nm should take no more than 30 hours under power.

Vac seal it with a huge food saver bag, toss it in 300 Yeti and tow it like a dingy. Yeti might make it worth your while it successfull.

Take it apart a put the bits in boxes, spread weight low down and central.
Largest item will be the block and should be a two person lift.


Easy to re-assemble.

You laugh, but I do have a distrust of things electronic, so I do in fact often look at the compass.
I was flying from Ft Pierce FL to Liberia Costa Rica in a Crop Duster.
Somewhere in the middle of the Gulf, I noticed the GPS heading and the Mag Compass disagreed, so I turned one way then the other. GPS never changed a bit, it was frozen. I couldn't even turn it off, I had to remove the battery and reinstall it for it to work. (Garmin 396) an excellent GPS, quality stuff.
That was probably ten years ago and I still occasionally use that GPS, it has never done that again

Ah, I was just kidding, I'm right there with you. I may be the last person using paper charts and a hand bearing compass. I was in a shop last year asking about a Walker Log and I was just about laughed out of the place. I'd still use my RDF if it worked!
