Rust Stains on Foredeck

Guys I have my 33 y/o Tartan looking sweet.... EXCEPT for the rust stain caused by the anchor chain.

Any suggestions on how to remove the stain? Neither my favorite bleach cleaner nor vinegar is having any demonstrative impact.

Told avoid reoccurrence, I could get 6-8 feet of SS and join it to the other chain. Is that the best way to avoid reoccurrence or is there some sage-like wisdom someone can share?

Try acid. I forget which one, but someone will chime in. oxalic? Just keep your chain good shape and you shouldnt have that issue. Rust is hard to get off of gel coat for sure. If you cant get it off you could consider a non skid like treadmaster up there, keeps the chain from marring up the deck well and is soft-ish.

Snore,

Oxalic acid crystals. Mix with water according to the instructions. Works great. Then rinse it off thoroughly. It will make bleached out stripes in your bottom paint if you don't.

Or, you can neutralize it with a baking soda and water solution after the rusty look is gone, then rinse it all off.

Re: Rust Stains on Foredeck

Coca-cola is weak phosphoric acid, bar keepers friend is strong oxalic acid.

I don't understand how sea water removes rust and have never had that experience before. It seems like if sea water worked, the deck would always be sparkling white.

Ospho. Cut it with a bit of water, put it in a spray bottle, spray on deck and watch rust stains disappear. Works well for rust dots from grinding an cutting steel too. Don't walk on deck barefoot until it is rinsed off.

Re: Rust Stains on Foredeck

Well, if it is a measurement contest, I am further than you with more miles and longer to go. But I don't see how that has anything to do with this topic.

I simply pointed out that I have never been able to remove rust stains from fiberglass using sea water. And I wondered why so many boats regularly doused with sea water have so much rust on them.

I agreed that your other rust removal ways can work and gave the reason why.

Has anyone else ever been able to remove rust with only sea water? Even with a deck brush?

Once the rust gets into the "pores" of the gel coat, no amount of "elbow grease " will take it out.... unless your applying sand paper with that elbow grease! Sure ... just some light surface stain...

Barkeeper's Friend will clean the rust off, but it is hard on galvanized steel so keep it away from your chain and anchor. Rich

Re: Rust Stains on Foredeck

Home Depot & Lowes both carry rust removal liquids. Most are oxalic acid based. I wear rubber gloves when using them. I think that CLR is one of the common brand names. They work pretty quickly. Just keep that stuff away from anything galvanized. They eat zinc as well as rust stains.
