Rudder pulls boat left

I recently installed a new rudder on my 1984 C&C Landfall 35. After I splashed the boat, I was dismayed that the rudder caused the boat to steer left. When I pulled the boat back out of the water, examination showed that the rudder was offset on the stock having more thickness on the left side. I believe this is causing lift on the left side like an airplane wing. I called the manufacturer for help but he blew me off saying this was not uncommon and that I should have a diver attach a tab to offset the pull. I don’t like this idea and ask for suggestions from the forum. Thanks.

Sounds like they have an excuse for poor manufacturing. You could build up the glass on the opposite side to even it out.

I agree with Cheekakio. It is appalling manufacturing and service but it should not be hard to fix.

Others have had the same problem after a rudder change.

The suggestion to fix the problem by a tab is audacious.
The rudder should be made symmetrical (either by adding grp on the thin side or by taking of excess material on the thick).
Sue him for the cost if he does not take the repair on himself.

Re: Rudder pulls boat left

Does this "steering left " happen under all conditions - under power and under sail on both tacks ?

A tab is what you weld onto a shrimp boat barn door rudder to ease a stubborn helm.....not a NACA foil!!!

Also this...does the pull happen while sailing? Or only under power?

Re: Rudder pulls boat left

Obviously shoddy manufacturing. I'd send it back in a NY second, except those kind of folks may never refund your money nor make it right. I hope you paid by credit card. Challenge the amount Otherwise, a "nice" letter from a barn-yard dog attorney.

Trying to fix it yourself is a costly, problematic journey. If the thing is so poorly fabricated to begin with, who knows what else is wrong with it.

Re: Rudder pulls boat left

I've built and worked on a lot of boats and ships, never seeing a rudder built offset. It would have to act like an airfoil because the path is longer as the water moves around the offset shaft.

I note that thus far no reply to the does it happen under sail question, Clearly there is some consideration behind the question as to if it has anything to do with prop walk.

Re: Rudder pulls boat left

I am slightly confused. If the rudder causes steering, move the tiller / wheel so the boat goes straight. How much error does the rudder cause if the tiller/ wheel is centered?. If a tiller, loosen the clamp at the top of the rudder and center it. If a wheel move the whipping cord that marks straight ahead to the top of the wheel.
p.s., I am still as annoyed as you are that the rudder is not built right.
