A shaped rudder can be built in a few hours using ten guage for the sides. Eliminate the centre piece, it's only dead weight and will add to the time and hassle of making a new rudder . Tack your spacers to the shaft and bend the ten guage around them.I've built about three dozen of them.

Hi thanks Louis, 10 gauge would be what in metric ???
I start this project in two weeks and have been sorting everything ready to go. I can go either timber OR steel and am leaning toward the steel for speed as I only have a few days to compleate it once the boat comes out. I was wondering what thickness I would need and wondered how I would bend it. I know 10 gauge is light and will be easy to bend, but not sure exactly how light.
Oh and is it galv coated or just plain steel and then do you treat it with anything or just let the anode take care of it like the steel plate is being protected now.
