Roller furling swivel help

Good evening to you all,

Just like to say a big hello to all, I am a newbie not only to this site but to sailing so I guess I am in your hands here.

Could somebody please help me with this,

I have just bought a yacht (Prospect 900) and I love it very much although I have not sailed her yet. I unstopped the mast due to me wanting to renew the tri colour, antenna and wind indicator. a friend of mine noticed that the furling swivel never had an inner section therefore was extremely slack. I would assume it was like this with the previous owner had it too.

the name on the roller reefing is : SEAFURL HOOD YACHT SYSTEM

I have taken some picture but as I am new I don't know how to upload on to this thread.

I am wondering if there is anyone on here that has one for sale or can repair them or help me.

any help will be much appreciated indeed.

Thanks Paul

Re: Roller furling swivel help

I was able to find a PDF manual online to help a friend fix his sea furl. At least you would be able to see how it is supposed to go together and what might be missing...that is if it is the similar unit...pictures would help also.

Re: Roller furling swivel help

I have the manual and can answer questions. Is the swivel loose or the foils? Need a better description of problem. There are three sizes 700/800/900

Re: Roller furling swivel help

Many thanks for your quick reply,

Just to make you aware I am in Liverpool in the UK!

Is there any way that I can insert a picture on the forum to show you what my issue is.

I know this doesn't help much but I have found the type of swivel it is in the link below, all the internals of the swivel are missing on the one I have, I just have a large hole.

Hood Sea Furl 2 Roller Reefing from 35' sloop Saanich, Victoria

I don't have the money to buy a whole new system so I have to either try and replace or fix the one I have got.

Hi Paul,

Welcome to CF ! (and sailing)

Two ways to add pictures to your post:

1= Inline= This will require the picture being hosted on an external web link... click the little yellow box that looks like mountains with a sun... Paste the link address where requested....

2=At the end=Any picture (or other files) of reasonable size can be attached to the post... Scroll below the message box where you type your post to "attach files"... Then follow the directions....

I find it helpful to always "preview post" before hitting the submit reply button to make sure things look right and I didn't screw something up... Or accidentally post the image of 5 hot supermodels giving me an all over body massage...

Re: Roller furling swivel help

First we need to establish model...the pic is "Seafurl 2" the manual I have is 700/800/900 which are continuous feed, like a code zero furler. The swivel parts are similar, except 700/800/900 have round foils. Still parts are named: swivel tube (swivel halves inside/swivel cups outside), 2) halyard swivel halves (plastic bushing halves that slide on foil), (2) swivel cups (halyard/head attach), (3) thrust washers, (2) spirolox rings and (4) sets of bearings (23 each set, variable size, on 700/800/900).
Unfortunately I must go to work ATM...

Pompanette, in Tampa/Clearwater, Florida Now own Hood, are extremely helpful. Recently converted me LD system to SL. They could not have been more co-operative. Good luck.

Re: Roller furling swivel help

I also have a SEAFURL2 system with a swivel issue. If the top section became lose it could have dropped so while the mast is down you need to disconnect and inspect it at the top and its an easy fix. If the stay really is slack that is a different issue possibly caused by failure at the mast attachment. You can go years with a dropped top section but as the mast is down its best to fix it now. My rigger advised there is always a risk that if you do nothing the halyard might foul the swivel and force you to replace the whole system (Hood has few spares for this old system).

Re: Roller furling swivel help

Congrats on pic upload! Still a bit hard t tell from one pic... Looks like you need a swivel tube and a pair of halyard swivel halves. Are the spirolox (snap rings) (3) all there? I am guessing the balls are missing (about $0.30 each) We still need to determine Seafurl model/size. Are the foils round or "square-ish" I need diameter and/or x/y measurements of foil section. I am friends with manager of local rigging shop and we have several used marine equipment stores. I could check with Hood/ Pompanette for availability and check for used unit...an official reason to paw through marine gear store...more info please!

Re: Roller furling swivel help

Many thanks for the replies,

I work away most of the week so when I get home I will take more pictures, I have got the 2 pictures below and looking at them it seems like it is not the Seafurl 2, on the drum it says Seafurl Hood yacht system.

Re: Roller furling swivel help

Ok...I get 2.7 x 3 cm dual luff...the good news is that you only need the plastic halyard swivel halves. They should just snap in. I think I have enough info to see my friend and check availability. It would help to have the bore diameter of the swivel tube. These "sliding plastic bushings" could be made in a local to you, machine shop in two halves and retained with external spirolox rings, if unavailable through Hood or other sources. What is your hopeful launch schedule? Not having bushings before should not effect launch. Are the swivels free turning? Might be a good time to clean and regrease...will discuss that later...Cheers!
