Rethreading old Lewmar travellers

Hi all,

I have 1990 vintage Lewmar traveller on my mainsheet. The traveller line passes through a hole in the car to blocks either side. I want to replace the line. There is a kind of plastic stopper wedged into the groove where the line passes through, and it continues on the outside edges of the car. It doesn't want to budge, and I think it would be destroyed if I try to lever it out.

Any suggestions on how to remove this, and replace the line. I'll post a photo if required.

Regards,

Steve

Re: Rethreading old Lewmar travellers

Do you know which “line or series” of traveler you have?

Here’s the Manual for the “Ocean” series.

Thanks for the link, Gord.

Not sure of the series, but its an older model, prior to the introduction of recirculating balls. I couldn't find any older manuals on the web.
It has roller wheels which ride under an aluminium track.

Hi
Steve.Garlick.

I have the same problem / same traveler by the sounds of it.

Did you find the solution?

Hi Greg,

Thanks for replying. I have sorted it now though, I saw another boat in the marina with the same traveler as mine but with new rope in. He showed me what to do.

Regards

Derek

Derek,

I have the same traveler and the same challenge figuring out how to remove/replace the line. What's the solution?

Thanks!

Paul

Re: Rethreading old Lewmar travellers

Hi Paul,

Yes, first you need to undo the two bolts that hold the pullies and eye strap for the lower block. You then need to get a large screwdriver and whilst pulling the rope ease out the plastic wedge.
Looking at it you would think that it's one continuous piece of rope but it's not!
The ends of the rope are trapped in the traveller by these two wedges.
When you replace the rope make sure you get exactly the same size as the original or else you won't be able to force the wedges back in if its too thick.
Hope this helps.
BTW, it was a complete pig to reassemble

Regards

Derek
