Repair teak plywood delamination

There is a curved piece of teak laminated plywood that has water damage. I have repaired the leak that caused it. (at least I hope so)

It has teak hardwood trim strips at the top and the bottom, so I think I can pull it down and put it back up with the strips covering any minor damage from the repair (if any)

My plan is to pull it down. Steam the laminate to make it pliable so it doesn't crack as I pull it into shape, use a large gauge syringe to put glue deeply into the delamination and clamp.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thank you

Compressed air also helps to distribute the adhesive. If you can find out what sort of adhesive was used originally , use something compatible.

I replaced it with Home Depot luxury vinyl floor planks, most people don't notice, and it will never rot again.

Hi Tmacmi,

Would be mindful of steaming something that is already glued.

They idea behind steaming is really applying heat evenly without burning. This softens the cellulose in the timber and allows it to be malleable.

The heat will break down any glue bonds that are there, and further more the timber when laminated wont move till those glue bonds have broken.

You have a photo by any chance?

I personally really enjoy steam bending, happy to help if I can mate.

Boatbroke,

I finally got out to the boat this past weekend. The attached link is to a video I took of the area in question. I would love your input (and anybody else's)

Thanks

Re: Repair teak plywood delamination

I would avoid steam; you're likely going to wind up messing up the finish a bit.

It looks relatively flat, and so I'd suggest taking the entire piece out, putting a thin layer of glue underneath the teak veneer (shooting it as far in as possible, and then clamping with a flat piece of wood that is bigger than the area being glued. If it's not flat, then clamp with a piece of wood that has been shaped to the same profile.

Use freezer paper between the piece you are clamping and the plywood so that if any glue that finds its way out it doesn't end up binding the two pieces together.
