Removing Refrigeration

I have an old Grunert refrigeration system which I would like to replace someday. The instructions call for discharging the refrigerant to the outdoors but this is freon and I'm wondering if there is some more environmentally friendly way of getting rid of it.

Your instincts are sound.
Before discarding any freezer, refrigerator, water cooler, dehumidifier, air conditioner, or other type of appliance containing ChloroFluoroCarbon (CFC) gas, the freon CFC must be removed by a certified technician properly licensed, trained and equipped to recover the freon.

The way we get rid of it this time of the year is to head South until the butter melts. The Farmers Almanac counts the number of motor homes heading South, and the amount of wood being cut for their predictions.
They used to cut blocks of ice from the lakes and tow them with a team of horses, then packed the ice with sawdust in a shed.
The ice was sold during the summer.

Is this a cold plate system? If you are tossing it, would you mind if I took it off your hands?

Any idea what the dimensions of the plate are?

Hello Sean,
Yes several large holding plates. But I'm not taking the system out yet since it still runs albeit with alot of noise and power consumption. I am considering adding insulation to the outside of the freezer and frige boxes in a year or 2 at which time I will replace the whole system.

PS. Your vessel is magnificent of course- can't imagine that it needs anything!
