Removing Quadrant For Removing Rudder

Working at removing rudder on a 1965 Pearson Invicta. Today I was disassembling stuffing box and steering quadrant. Seems like after taking off clamp bolts and set screws on the quadrant Pearson also decided to put a pin in thru the rudder post and braze it in! Has anyone heard of this type of process in securing a steering quadrant on a rudder post? What would be the best way to remove it? Pictures (aft/fore) seems like that is what they did. Appreciate any help here.

Re: Removing Quadrant For Removing Rudder

My 1969 P35 had a threaded set screw. The key way was not used nor any other means to lock the quadrant in place. I can't tell from the picture how yours is set up but if there is a brazed in pin that doesn't seem like it would be a prudent way to lock the quadrant. If it was done, might have to drill out the pin.

Have you tried putting a large hammer against the shaft and pounding on the quadrant collar from the other side. It would be very hard to braze the pin into the rudder shaft so should yield to such persuasion and should come loose.

That additional pin may be just a locating dowel to prevent the quadrant from wearing the set screws and migrating down the rudder stalk. Have seen this on other boats.

Griended down area around the place where I saw the braze bump on quadrent and indeed there is a pin there. Tried knocking it out with a punch to no good. Thinking I will need to drill it out. Not looking forward to doing that in the space between the hull and cockpit sole!

Re: Removing Quadrant For Removing Rudder

If it is the typical quadrant, you've got the quadrant on one side and the clamping piece on the other side of the rudder shaft. It is highly doubtful that the pin is brazed onto the rudder shaft but just to the clamping piece. Should be just a matter of tapping the offending piece off.

I can't for the life of me figure out what that second photo is. Maybe another photo might help us give you some advice.

Re: Removing Quadrant For Removing Rudder

Peter, Thanks for the response. The second picture is the other side (quadrant side). First picture is of clamp side. After grinding down the clamp side I am almost positive Pearson drilled a hole thru clamp side, shaft, and quadrant side installed a pin and brazed it in. Will take a picture after grinding the clamp side tomorrow or Sunday and post.

Re: Removing Quadrant For Removing Rudder

Here are some more pictures. Pin is steel (magnet is pulling in picture) and seems to go all the way thru rudder post. After grinding braze off could not punch it thru (as seen with indents on pin from the clamp side of quadrant). Looks like I will need to drill it out. Not looking forward to that in the space I need to do it.
