removing portlights on a 30 yo Hinckley

I am trying to remove ans reseal the portlights/holes on my 30 year old
Hinckley 49. There is no obvious way to remove them outside of force, which is not an option as the surrounding woodwork would suffer.
The Hinckley portlights are mounted from the inside with nothing on the outside at all.
Is there anyone out there that has removed these before, I would love to learn from your experience so I dont stuff it up.
thanks in advance.

Re: removing portlights on a 30 yo Hinckley

Most of the portlights I seen have to be removed from the inside. I used a heat gun to soften up the bedding material, (Not hot but warm to the touch - take your time) I used a fein multi master to go around the inside flange followed by a flat pry bar. It took about an hour to remove and fortunately they hadn't used 5200. The outside, at least on Vigah was more a decorative ring which the portlight flange seals to.

Come to think of it, you may just want to remove the outside ring and re-seal it. I had to remove the portlights to replace the bulkhead behind them.

The main question is, are they leaking and if so where and how long. There could be other problems underneath. Post a picture if you can.

As a follow up is it a brass item or is it a wood frame portlight? I was talking about some brass port-holes. I tried removing one of our wood framed portlights and had to re-make the frame as it was sealed in with 5200 and came off in pieces. Aft Port-light | Sailing Vessel Vigah

In the future, I would use my multimaster to clean out a seam and caulk with 4200.

Call bob hood at Hinckley in Portsmouth RI. He'd certainly give you an approach that won't damage the boat. He's the man.

Thanks Bletso, they are made from bronze, I have heard that those multimaster tools are the way to go, yet the hinckley portlights are a bit different from the normal ones you see these days. Thx for the tip on the 4200, I will research.
