Removing interior Vinyl Headliner - Hallberg Rassy 352

Hi there,
We just purchased an ‘84 Hallberg Rassy 352 and the interior vinyl headliner is a bit of a mess. It’s pulling away from the walls in some areas and water stains in others. We were toying with the idea to just paint it for a quick fix now, but would ultimately want to take it off and paint the fiberglass underneath. Problem is there’s a bunch of glue underneath the headliner and I hear it’s a huge pain to remove it. Anyone have experience with just painting over the glue? How did it work out for you? What paint did you use? Thanks !!
