Thanks! After all this work it is going to be tough to mostly enjoy the boat instead of just work on her. Most of the major projects from this point on are costly, and at best, I am working as an "on call/not even part time rigger." So, those projects will have to wait for me to get a real job.

Oh but I am dreaming about new sails, an autopilot, wind generators and canvas!

cpa,

And here (from your screen handle) I thought you were a chartered public accountant hauling in the big bucks when you work. Silly me.

Oh, yea, cpa also means closest point of approach to me.

Boy was I far off!

Lol!! No, not an accountant. Those are my initials! I thought about accounting, but I have never been a fan of higher level math. I am just a nearly unemployed student, back in school for the sole purpose of being able to afford the large boat!

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

Long time no update. Things have been going good with the Compass. We have been sailing a bit and continuing the work. School has been hectic, so a lot of focus has been going there. I am still making good progress though. Over the last couple month I have been working on interior lighting, plumbing, and regular maintenance.

I have been hesitant to get started on the interior lighting. Most of the lighting fixtures are $25 to $50 dollars a piece. The boat has 15 fixtures and one worked. So I ended up buying new light bulb sockets and wiring them into the old fixtures. I also replaced the bulbs and polished up the stainless. It is very nice to have working lights. Around that time I also installed the fixed mount VHF radio. I decided to go with a Standard GX2150 with AIS. Also I installed new battery cables for the house bank and cleaned the area up a bit.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The plumbing was a pretty intensive project. I basically replaced everything. I have never had pressure water on a boat, so I had to learn a little about it. The boat originally came with a diaphragm pump. I switched out to a Jabsco centrifugal unit. I believe it is 5gpm. The boat has a manifold system with valves for the 3 water tanks. I took it all apart and cleaned everything up, removed all hoses and installed new pump, accumulator, and filter. The water system is working great. I also installed a self contained shower sump / pump and have all new hose as well. I also painted the area under the galley sink where the plumbing gear goes. It is a little cluttered under the sink. I looked for other areas to locate the system, but in the end I decided to keep it where it was. All other areas would require me to pull floorboards to gain access. I like to keep access as simple as possible.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The boat was very overdue for a bottom job. It had been maybe 25 months. I usually don't wait so long, but money is tight. Last haul out we used Pettit Vivid and did not have great luck with it. The paint worked decently at first, but after about 15-16 months the paint started to fail. I'm feeling that it was an application issue though. The paint was failing in perfectly straight delineated areas. It seems like maybe the yard needed 2 gallons for a full second coat and used 1. That is my best guess.

Being that I am in Florida, it is actually a better deal to pay someone to paint the bottom than to do it yourself ($1 a foot per day lay days and buying paint from yard at $350 a gallon). So, I contracted Elite Marine to do the job. I went with Sea Hawk Biocop gray on the bottom. I had a few projects to complete while the boat was out of the water. I wanted to replace both of my galley ball valves with flanged sea cocks and I wanted to handle painting the saildrive and prop. I also needed to get a survey.

The bottom was in very good shape. No blisters or other issues. The saildrive on the other hand looked a little rough. When the saildrive was installed, I had the yard put on 5 coats of Sea Hawk Tuff Stuff epoxy and then the Sea Hawk Smart Solution (no metal) antifouling. My plan going into this was four coats of Primocon primer followed by the Smart Solution antifouling.

Unfortunately the sail drive's paint and primer were in pretty rough shape. I sanded down the saildrive to about 65% bare metal and then applied 5 coats of Interlux 2000e following the directions very strictly. Next we applied the antifouling. Luckily there was no signs of corrosion on the unit. I guess I was lucky. I will be keeping a better eye on this in the future. I have a diver and I get a report every month. But, there was an error and the last six months of reports I got were the wrong ones. I also changed the saildrive oil and installed a new zinc. I usually haul the boat much more frequently. I think I will shoot for 18 months on this bottom. I have also been considering cleaning the bottom myself or at least diving on it every month.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The galley thru hull work was not too bad. I removed the galley ball valves with little issue. They were on epoxied plywood backing plates that I never really trusted. I purchased two Groco IBVF flanged adapter bases with the Groco backing blocks. The install was pretty straight forward, although access could have been a little better. I then cleaned up my old ball valves and fittings. It came out pretty decent. I really liked the Groco IBVF bases and backing blocks. Next haul out I will replace them all in a similar fashion.

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

The boat is still out of the water and we should be splashing on Wednesday. I did have the boat surveyed and was delighted that no issues were found. The surveyor tapped and used a moisture meter on the hull and deck . I guess I was not really surprised. Maybe in the back of my mind I had little worries about moisture in the rudder. So all is well there.

Also I have a new mainsail that I will install when the boat splashes. I sent out quotes and decided to go with my buddy Keith at Advanced Sails here locally in St. Petersburg. He made a club race main for my old S&S 34 that I just loved. In the end we decided to go cross cut and and use Marblehead 9.77 oz. cloth. The sail is triple stitched, has two reefs, and a medium roach. I am REALLY looking forward to this. There is almost nothing I like more than new sails.

Congrats, man! Keep it up.

I took a new job managing an extremely busy boat yard, no time for any fun at all here, even refit fun. Good to see you still at it!

Re: Refitting a Compass 47

So progress is still being made. While it is not moving along as fast as I would like, it is still getting done. In June we will be at our four year anniversary with this project. My last boat project took a little over two years to finish (much smaller boat). Also, back then I had a great job and could pour money into the boat. This is definitely much more challenging. In the end though, I still consider myself the luckiest person in the world for finding this boat and being able to bring her back to life.

Besides sailing, the next items on my hit list are:

Install head and holding tank.
Do something about cabin top mounted handrails.
Empty and clean out fuel tanks and run a transfer pump and filter to the day tank.

Thanks and thank you for all of the help along the way! If there was a MVP award in this forum section, you would win hands down. Good luck with the new job and the boat.
