Re: Refit/Restoration of 1985 62' Aluminium Yacht

I have been 5 years doing a total refit on my boat, replaced every single system with best available components, new Gen, paint, everything from keel up. I have made dozens of lists and cost estimates as I progressed and finally gave up on estimating and now just throw money at it until I finish.
I have an extensive background in the marine industry and it does not make any difference. What ever you think this will cost double it and pray.
Not trying to put you off, go for it, but if you think you are going to end up buying a cheap boat and do the refit on the cheap and the result will put you ahead of the game, it won't happen.
If you love this boat and are planning on keeping it for a very long time you may be happy with the outcome.
Good luck.

Hi Hanksy

Yes apologies all for the extended absence! Other commitments have kept me pretty busy the last couple of months and away from my project, I need to get down to the yard, catch up with progress and take a few more pictures.

Will be back posting again shortly.

Re: Refit/Restoration of 1985 62' Aluminium Yacht

I hear you Rourkeh!

Luckily the boat is a hobby project, I'm hoping to own it for many years and get some good fun out of her, the upgrades are pretty much to bring it up to current seaworthy standards, as most serviceable items are nearing end of life after 30 yrs at sea.

I am keen to take advantage of the improvements made in just about every area of boat technology since she was built in '86, hopefully as I go along.

I do have a budget just in case I seemed a bit blasι in previous posts, I have also just convinced my brother to buy into the project to lighten the load too!

We'll see how that goes!

Re: Refit/Restoration of 1985 62' Aluminium Yacht

Ok...back on track!

Have been busy since Xmas with various business/family commitments and also trying to build a new family home too. This combined with the fact that the yard is a 3 hr drive away, has severely restricted the amount of time I have had to work on my project and obviously how many updates I have posted, apologies for that.

I hope to get down to the boat at least fortnightly from here on in!

Anyway, delighted with the progress made on the hull repaint, to be fair to the yard, they too have been delayed on progress waiting for the ambient outside temp to warm up a little. One half and the transom painted, and they will have painted the other half by the end of next week, so hull work done the scaffolding can be removed.

Here's some pics. Boot rail and bottom stripe not painted yet.

Re: Refit/Restoration of 1985 62' Aluminium Yacht

The corrosion has been addressed at all the stainless steel stanchion rail bases, all along the deck, primed, filled, faired and repainted. Very pleased with the outcome

Engine room tidying up nicely, have to crack those fuel tank covers soon, to remove 30 yrs of diesel sludge. Also all the old foam insulation removed so position for the new genset starting to take shape, just need to unpack it from the crate now!

Pleased with how the custom hatch worked out, the shipwright has done a marvellous job on the teak cradle to take the curve of the deck out. Will trim off the sealer at a later date.
