Refinishing recommendations

Hello. The wood on my boat (trim around the companion way and hand rails) needs to be sanded and refinished. Can I use a stain/polyurathane product or is there specific type of sealer I should use? I sail on the upper Chesapeake.

Re: Refinishing recommendations

Answer depends.

1. Is the wood teak?
2. Do you want it to retain a natural, wood look and finish?

If yes to the above there are three common options for boats

1. Leave it natural and let it turn silver/gray. Requires period cleaning and rinsing.

2. Oil it. Easy but builds up over time, looks like freshly sanded wood, oil attracts dirt, only lasts a few months and has to be redone.

2. Varnish. More work, needs 8-10 coats to last, looks beautiful, protects the wood, once a year a light sanding and 1-2 fresh coats will keep it nice for years before you have to strip to bare wood and start over.

Yes, stain can be used, although properly sanded mahoghany or teak should look fine without it. Polyurethane is fine, be sure to get the “exterior” type though. Varathane is one of my favorite “varnishes”.

skipmac, I have no idea if tge wood is teak. It's a Newport 33. I know the original owner. I'll ask him.
