Re-upholstering

I am looking to re-upholster my v-berth cushions.

Currently they have rough 1970's plaid covering.

I am trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

Do you have any suggestions.

They did all my cushions using my foam for under $800.00
I just put them in the S2 8.0 tonight. I'm at Captain Sam's Boat Yard, Washington NC getting the S2 a face lift.

The folks at LoomCraft are very nice. I'll take a few pics in the morning and post them

I used Rochford supply in Minnesota. They have more options than you can imagine. Upholstery Supply & Marine Fabric Superstore check for someone close by that is at least as big. Ask for remnants and closeouts.
Re-upholstering was one of the easiest projects in be refurbishing project. I fitted my berths with mattress covers but it's a big boat and births are for sleeping not storage. Mounting the cushions on 1/8 plywood and simply wrapping the covers around the cushions and stapling the back side is very easy.

DIY... open up (unpick) the old covers... then get your replacement material.. preferably one without patterns.. and use the old sections as your patterns... mark each segment with a piece of chalk and cut paying attention to doing it so that the weft and weave match each other vertical and horizontally.. machine up...

Not done mine yet - mine date from 1970 and are thick vinyl, still in serviceable condition (probably good for another 40 years!) but in bright red and now looking a bit tired / faded as well as being bright red not to my taste.

Plan is to go the loose fit cover approach - given that I f##ked up my freebie domestic sewing machine last year (3 layers of sail cloth was a test too far ) - with the backs (bottom) semi open and tensioned with elastic so fit does not have to be perfect (kinda like a fitted sheet on a bed)....instead of sewing am thinking of use plastic press studs, I feel most comfortable when using a hammer (or a close cousin ).

If your cushions are still servicable (and even if they need patching - as out of sight = out of mind, so matching (and neatness?!) not an issue) then maybe the same approach would work - albeit for all new (and no sewing machine) I would favour the route mentioned by TSL - plywood base and staples.

Watch the sailrite videos. No sewing is required to redo the salon unless you want to get real upscale(two tone) . If so, pay the big $$ and have it done.

We just bought some UltraSuede to redo our upholstery so I'm still getting over the cost of that... when this latest "cheapest" thread came up
