I think I may have found the problem. The internal drive ring has a tiny crack in it, but I believe it's enough to allow it to slip in only 1 direction. I'll order a replacement and update here.

Update: replaced the drive ring, and did a calibration : still issues. Finally got a chance to reswing the compass and do yet another calibration - I immediately noticed how much quicker it accepted the auto learn (like less than 10 steps to complete). Seems to be working fine now.

Takeaways - check your drive rings. If you need to recalibrate, swing the compass and recalibrate.
