Rattling door catches

I have this kind of hook style door catches on three doors on my boat (image below). They are used when at anchor and when at sea to hold certain doors open. They rattle like hell, and I can't imagine they are a proper marine design.



On doors that don't open to rest against a flat surface, what have you used to keep them open and prevent any rattling?

Unfortunately those are used extensively on boats. However, Defender have some "Sea Dog" hooks that have a bushing insert that should help. I've never used them but I have used elastic bands.

We don't keep any doors open. I've never had an issue with mold or mildew because of that.... only from a leak that wouldn't have been cured by an open door.

As a very inexpensive solution, cut a piece of rubber hose slightly larger than the diameter of the hook and slightly longer than the shank of the hook. Slide the hose section onto the hook and over the shank. Use soft hose like vacuum line. When securing the door, slide the hose back from the hook end . When released the hose will push against the eye . Rattle cured.

Found some elastic bands to experiment with. Would like something more permanent though.

Elastic bands will perish very quickly and make a mess in a lot of climates.

An appropriate sized short length of hose (or a small cork) jammed into the padeye should allow the hook eye to rotate but not rattle.

You can also use a piece of neoprene rubber like a spring cushion, to open the door it has to compress this cushion, that will hold the door in tension keeping the hook tight, and no rattle

Heat shrink tubing is very thin and will stay tight.... and you can push it a bit around the bend in the hook before shrinking it.
