Raising the boom

I would like to raise the boom on my boat by 3-4 inches. It would make all the difference when standing at the wheel. And if it went up a good foot, I could actually put an awning in place. Has anyone raised their boom? At what point does reducing mainsail area throw the boat out of balance? The boom is inside a track on the mast and it appears to be held in place by several large screws.

Thanks

Michael

Michael, I am thinking of doing the same thing for much the same reason. If you take some off the top of the sail it shouldn't change balance much. Will look forward to what the experts say.

I just raised mine 5 inches. Alot of people down here just wedge the sail to gain standing room for a bimini but that 1) defeats the reefing points 2) removes a bunch of sail and 3) looks pretty ugly.

As it turned out, there was enough play at the top of mast that the sail shop did not have to modify the sail at all. The 5 inches just ended up making the sail taller relative to the mast.
