Questions on adding a stern rail

Hi everyone,

I have a question about chafing of the main sheet if a aft rail is added.

I am thinking of modifying an existing 1 inch stainless rail to support adding a motor mount for a Suzuki 2.5hp dinghy motor (30lbs).

The boat is a Norsea27 aft cabin in Lake Clair Shores, Michigan. I am new to the boat, and she has been in the water for 2 weeks.

The existing aft rail is essentially 2 risers that are through bolted in the aft deck, with a piece of teak that attaches the stern light. The risers also have wires for a Garmin gps sensor and a Marino 12v plug receptacle that the anchor light is plugged into.

There is a Monitor wind vane attached to the aft of the boat. The main sheet has 3:1 blocks that run from the boom to the padeyes and then to the boom gallows where it clears off.

I am thinking of drilling into the boom gallows support which is a 2 inch painted galvanized pipe then using 1 inch 316 stainless tubing to tie into the existing stern tubing riser. I can then raise the teak rail.

When the boom is extended, the lines will make contact against the stainless steel tubing I worry the force could impede the ability to control the boom sheet, or simply bend or damage the tubing.

If anyone could give me an idea of how the constructed their rail, or if the chafing is a problem I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!

Re: Questions on adding a stern rail

How about a sketch of what you are proposing to do?

Great Idea!
I hope it does not look like Mr. Magoo drew it.
