PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

Hello,

I purchased a 77 Viking 43 DCMY about 2 weeks ago. As soon as you open the companionway, strong smell of diesel. Got much worse after delivery. There were two leaks that have been fixed. The bilge was filthy with diesel and oil and am in the process of cleaning that up (still a little to go). That said, as I clean I am not noticing any reduction of the smell. I am replacing the futon and other cushions in the cabin. There are also areas of the bilge that are impossible to get to.

I read on other threads that one recommended product was PureAyre. I saw they have a nice fogger available. Seems like a good way to access hard to reach areas (I understand that wont necessarily clean it).

Buy PureAyre, odor eliminator; effective, safe, all-natural.
It is down on the bottom of that page.

Does anyone have experience using this? Was thinking this might be great to use in the bilge after cleaning then throughout the cabin. Hope someone has used this in the past or something similar and can give feedback on results. Ive seen threads on the product, interested to see if anyone has had results with the fogger.

Thanks!

there is no magic diesel rid. only finding leak and fixing it, then washing bilges. have fun and good luck.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

I love PureAyre...used it for years. It will definitely get rid of diesel odors and is also good in bilges. .It's the only product I've found that eliminates ANY odor. Not only will it get of diesel and residual odor left behind by stinking sanitation hoses, but PureAyre is also rated for use around food...which means you can even use it to get rid of the odor left in your fridge by the steaks or fish that spoiled when a natural disaster took out shore power for 3 days. Also does a great job on musty PFDs and foulies.

How to use it (IMPORTANT!):
You can never eliminate any odor unless you first eliminate the source...'cuz as long as the source continues to exist, it'll continue to generate new odor. So first you have to find and fix any leak or replace the stinky hoses, then thoroughly clean the site, including every nook and cranny ...a good scrubbing with detergent and water. Mop up any excess water and let it air dry till it's at least only damp...no standing puddles. Now you're ready to eliminate the residual odor. Use PureAyre full strength...you do NOT need to spend the money for their fogger--a pump garden spray jug set to a fine mist works just as well and costs a lot less (Ortho Roundup makes a good quality 1 gallon size, available at Walmart for about $15). Spray every surface, nook and cranny...just a light spray. Do NOT rinse...just let it dry with hatches open so that plenty of fresh air can circulate. If the soft goods in the cabin have picked up the odor, just spraying it on the surface won't do much...you need to spray enough on carpets and rugs to penetrate to the backing...enough to penetrate cushions to the middle from both sides..not enough to make 'em drippy, just enough to get into the cushion....you'll prob'ly have to remove the covers and send 'em to be cleaned. Again, just let everything dry. If you still have any odor, you missed a spot.

If you still have questions, give me a shout and I'll be glad to answer 'em.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

The problem with the Pure Aye type stuff is, it can only treat what you can apply it to.

Correct the leak, clean it up, buy/rent/borrow and use an Ozone Generator. I got one off Amazon for like $50 and have only used it like 3 times, but it was well worth the purchase.

If the ozone generator does anything, it only treats the air - not the source.

Personally, I'll take Peggie's opinion to the bank.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

Hello All,

Thanks for the reply's. Definitely fixing/cleaning first. Hoping we solved the source issue fixing the two leaks. Will find out if there are more if the odor persists after all the cleaning and deoderizing after those repairs.

Would definitely prefer to use something like the garden spray. However the reason I was considering the fogger is because there are areas I cannot access easily so would not be able to do the best job spraying there. So was hoping the Fogger might have better access in the bilge to places I cant easily get.

Thoughts? Or is the Fogger still not worth it in that circumsance?

Thanks again!

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

Zeehag has it right. I put up with Eau de #2 Diesel For a year. Then I found a very small keak in the lift pump diaphram. Replaced the pump and cleaned the bilge. Problem solved.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

Unless you have a power washer, how are you able to clean those areas?

Fwiw, I tried their fogger about 10 years ago. Unless they've improved it considerably since then, it's not significantly more powerful than a pump garden sprayer. So I'd give it a try with the garden sprayer...if you still have odor after it's had time to thoroughly dry out, we can try to find a Plan B that's less expensive.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

Nah, Zeehag has it wrong.
PureAyre works well for diesel smell.

I don't know your boat but 5 gallons of water and some bilge cleaner sloshing around my bilges for a day of brisk sailing sure cleaned mine.

Do it dry weather though 'cause it takes a while to dry the crannies.

A shop vac and/or a sponge and a bucket does a good job in the crannies.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

1st, Peggy Hall is the final word on odors. Period.

Regarding an ozone generator:
Ozone kills everything. When I bought my boat it had been sitting for 3 years and was full of mold. I opened all drawers, cupboards, bilge hatches etc and ran an Ozone generator for a week with the boat interior sealed up as best I could..
Result: All mold in the boat DEAD.
Wiped down all accessible surfaces with vinegar,,,,,problem solved.

Note: be very cautious entering a boat or any confined space full of ozone.

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

After Peggie’s recommendation I put PurAyre in stock in my store. They make three versions, household, marine and commercial. I asked them if there was any difference between them as the prices were different. They told me that marine was more concentrated than household and commercial is more concentrated than marine.

I found that a light mist is not enough. You need to get the surface pretty wet. If the surface is porous like wood or tile grout, it may take several treatments.

Ozone is very effective but it damages rubber. I put an ozone generator in my boats’ cabin to control mildew. I let it run too long and the foam backing on my headliner started to fail. Don’t go into an enclosed space full of ozone. It made me cough very badly. Be careful with ozone.

It treats everything the odor "touched" meaning it goes everywhere air will go.

I of course as normal on the forum am lying even though I'm just reporting my direct personal experience. Ozone of course will never work on a boat, it only works for places like hotels and fire/smoke remediation.

Will give it a try with a garden sprayer first after Im done with the cleaning. Agreed maybe letting the cleaner slosh around will help get it into areas I cant as well.

Wish me luck!

Re: PureAyre Fogger for Diesel Smell?

I'd never use an ozone generator for more than an hour in a boat because the ozone attacks plastics pretty aggressively. That includes the wiring insulation.
