Protecting the deck from the anchor

We've just spent a bucket of $$ to repaint the deck of our 48' Ketch. We have a manual anchor windlass. When the anchor is hauled up, it drops (hard) on the deck. Any suggestions for protecting the deck? I've thought of a hard rubber piece affixed to the deck.

We use a bit of thin s/s sheet screwed to the deck in way of the chain. Works fine, should also work for anchor protection... might need to be a bit thicker if the anchor hits really hard, say 1 mm or so.

We have a strip of Starboard for protection. Original with the boat (2001) and still doing its job.

I have a steel deck with some rust spots where the stock has been bumping it. Thinking sacrificial board, fixed in such a way as to be easily replaceable. Teak would be nice, small enough to be cheap enough, even for me

The timber may be cut quickly by the chain. With s/s, it slides along the smooth surface, but does not cut into it, may scratch is slightly.

Hi Ann,

you're right of course and thanks, stainless wears much better than anything else I know of. There's a stainless plate protecting my topsides from the flukes but there are signs of rust expanding beneath the plate and I've added it to my growing list - could be a nightmare under there.

"Sacrificial" and "easily replaceable" are just first thoughts on trying to avoid unpaintable areas which hold water. Still thinking...

I'd put a sheet of Treadmaster in the color of your choice down and be done with it.
