pirate Propane bottle mounting

I'm thinking about mounting a propane bottle on the transom with an RV type bracket, then suroundng it with plywood, in heavy seas just reach over and turn it off. My columbia 30 rudder extends beyond the transom 16" or so, if I build things on the transom it would protect the rudder if I back into a dock or something. The columbia 32 seems to be same hull and rudder with 2 more feet aft. The propane bottle would be high, maybe I build custom swim step low, ladder, etc., none of which would increase length overall. Everything would have to be super heavy duty to withstand getting pooped. ? Sea Genie, Santa Barbara

Better yet get one of those fiberglass propane tank covers they sell for mounting on trailer tongues and put a plywood bottom (with drain holes) on it.

There's a guy with a Columbia 34 across the dock from me (in fact he's on this forum from time-to-time, Geordie is his name) who has a propane bottle mounted up near the stern rail. It might pay to look him up and ask him how it is mounted, his set-up looks really clean.

I have a dedicated gas bottle locker; it is sealed to belowdecks and ventilated into the cockpit. It has space for 3 x 4.5lb (2kg) gas bottles. I like having that stuff hidden away.
