Prevent door from breaking glass

My boat came with the clock and barometer mounted to the cabin wall. The glass was broken on the barometer, so I sent it into Weems and had it repaired. A few months later I found out why the glass was broken. I neglected to close the cabinet door completely. A wave went by, the door swung open and - crack - a broken glass.

I just got the barometer back from Weems again. I kinda like the location where they are, but I imagine it's only a matter of time before the door breaks the glass again.

Is there any way to rig the door so that it will not open beyond a certain point?

Re: Prevent door from breaking glass

Kind of an easy answer, yes, there are many ways. I needed to make sure a medicine cabinet door would not open against a large mirror, same situation. All it took was getting some heavy felt "chair leg sliders" at the hardware store, and sticking two of them on the edge of the medicine chest. When the door opens, it gets out to 90 degrees and jams up against the two (double thick) felt buttons. That stops it from opening against the mirror. A gorilla COULD certainly slam it, but hasn't so far.

Any type of trim or stop that prevents the door from opening out would work. That could be a "post" or other stopper installed on the bulkhead, next to the barometer, so the door "slams" into the stopper first. How to make that look ornamental or otherwise aesthetic, is one of those cruel "simpler exercise left to the reader" things.

From the look of it, you could install a simple small block on that ledge/shelf below the door, to also catch it from swinging all the way open.

Re: Prevent door from breaking glass

Simple Solutions:

1. Better latch on door. Always latch the door (habit).

2. A piece of string, screwed to the inside of cabinet and inside of door, with length of string only long enough to open the door enough but not long enough to open enough to hit clocks on wall. Put the screw on the top edge of inside of door, so it will drape down when closed and not prevent closing.

Hope that helps.

String can stretch and wear, bit a little bit of brass chain, now that would be nautical too.

Keep in that locker only things you will need at anchor, not under stress. Part of me is astonished that someone opened that door so hard that it broke the glass! I'd think the door would have a scar on it if someone had done that. If there is no scar, perhaps there is another cause for the breakage. [People don't generally slam doors open!]

Nonetheless, if you want to restrain the door, a strop of some kind, or the felt button method should work for you.

Re: Prevent door from breaking glass

If you are concerned about restricting access to the cabinet, add a small piece of wood horizontally, between the clock and barometer, that stands just proud of the two pieces. This prevents any interference with the opening of the cabinet and just acts as a 'door stop' between the two instruments.

Or, as mentioned, rig a small, removable chain that keeps the door from swinging open so far.

Bead Chain - Lowes' lighting section. Inexpensive. Comes in long lengths and couplings in small clear plastic packets. Plenty of extra if it breaks or gets tarnished.

Re: Prevent door from breaking glass

Back on the farm, we would make a wooden turn latch to keep the door closed. I found this page of excellent ideas... Karen and Jim's Excellent Adventure: Fiddly Bits: Making life on a small boat safer and more comfortable

Re: Prevent door from breaking glass

Along the same lines of preventing broken glass:

During a nasty storm, our jackets that were hanging in front of a full-length glass mirror fell and then the v-berth door slipped the latch and crashed into it.

I replaced the glass mirror with a plastic one; they aren't expensive, much lighter, reflect practically as well, and take a lot of worry off my mind.

The mirror in the head on my Jeanneau is perfectly placed for a person no more than four feet tall, so I added another plastic mirror to the door. I no longer have to endure Braille shaving.

Fair winds,

Leo

BTW... I've used this company to buy replacement glass for my clock. Wide selection and reasonable prices.
